What's new

The Hooded Appreciation Thread

I remember when we drafted him. I hadn’t looked into him much pre-draft but was quite surprised when I looked up his numbers and saw his game and was immediately pretty excited. He was a contributor from the beginning. Had last year’s squad stayed together, he was the perfect 2 for that system. It’s unfortunate he wasn’t healthy last year and couldn’t get into a rhythm last year when coming back because I believe we were really a 60 win team and he’s a huge part of that. Always a good guy. I’ll always consider him a Jazzman.

I had Hood as my avatar for years. Im thankful for his years here but as a huge fan, I've come to realization hes Jr. Smith. A guy who can win you games single handedly, bit also be nowhere to be found consistently. He has a place in this league, but Utah is not the fit.

We got a lot of mileage out of Rodney especially when you take into account how much we were paying for him vs how many minutes he played..

He was almost always bottom 5 paid on the team but we had much higher output, consistency and pressure expectations.

He was also around to help the team as they slowly emerged from the team woes post Sloan. I for one am grateful for his overall contributions (even though I may have been critical of his play on certain occasions).

Honestly I'm neutral with Hood. When we drafted him I was meh, l saw potential but again never really placed any high expectations on him. I guess what stood out to me was his his inconsistencies and injuries. He just seemed like he was soft and lacked toughness to persevere through some injuries. I'm grateful for the times he helped this franchise win games but I always knew he wasn't the answer for us moving forward. Good luck Hood.

He was a good player for us and helped us win some games. It's a shame he never took the next step with his consistency for us but I still think he can be a good player in the league. It's also a shame people turned against him for the thing he was actually doing best for this team. Oh well, I wish him all the best and hope he kills Boston in the playoffs.

Hood had some great moments. There are few players that have an unconscious mode and he possesses that. It was a joy to watch.

His exit has been much more professional than others. I think had reached a plateau here and I hope this will be good for both parties.

On another note, I think the brevity and lukewarm nature of this thread manifests that we all knew he wasn't part of what the Jazz are building. We wanted more for him because of perceived value, but at the end of the day it had become clear Hood could not stay here in the long run in order to press forward.

His injuries were his main culprit. He was a very good player for us and was not utilized correctly at all this season which contributed to his overall downfall with the Jazz. It's a shame as in the very near future fans will be clamoring for the team to acquire a player with his exact skill set. He will be missed more than some here realize.

I think Hood is a solid player and I am quite sure we will see him do things that makes us wish her were. But saying he wasn't used properly this season is one of the furthest things from reality that could be said. He was frequently hurt, he played inconsistent when he played, and he got beat out by a rookie who is killing it. Hood was given more than an ample shot to be what he wanted and what we needed. It simply evolved into a place where the role he wanted and the role we needed were different.

Wish Rodney the best and I hope Jazz fans show him some love when he returns.
Fans should treat him like they do Foye or Marvin Williams when they comes back. Which essentially means they should just ignore him or treat him like a random player from the other team.

You mean like sitting out 6 games for a leg bruise. That was kind of the final straw for me.

I'm a little bothered by the reports of his attitude behind the scenes. But he stayed professional on the court and always came across as a really good guy. I wish him the best in his future.

Hood was one of my favorites on the team. I think we are going to miss his ability to catch fire from three. I'll never forget him sinking 10 threes in a row over the Lakers. Causing Kobe to focus on him exclusively to the detriment of team defense, just so Rod would pass Kobe's record of threes in a game. Hood didn't hit another three, but we went on to blow the Lakers out. Hood didn't seem to care about not passing Kobe, and Kobe cared more for his record than the team win. I wish Hood the best, til we meet them in the playoffs!

Agree. I don't get the "wasn't used properly" claim. He was given every opportunity to claim the #1 option role from the beginning of the season. He started at SG, took the most shots. But he was inconsistent and missed games with illness and injuries. If anything, moving him to the bench was kind. It took the pressure off and allowed him to play against a lot of subs. Still, he was just not a dominant force: 42%/39% is good, but not #1 great. He missed 23 games last season and ~15 already this year.

He wants to be a starter - and could very well be for a rebuilding team next season. Many times when an alpha arrives, teams have to trade the former leaders. Malone caused AD to be traded. Stockton chased a former all-star, Green, off the roster. Warriors made a choice between Curry and Ellis. Both couldn't be the alphas. And so it is with Hood. In this case he really wasn't a leader, but wanted to be the center of the offense. He was offended over the Jazz giving Ingles a big contract and not agreeing to an extension with him. And then Mitchell exploded and took his starting spot. Hood's a good player. He just didn't make sense any more for Utah and requested a trade. Kudos for him and his agent keeping it out of the media. And a class act by Lindsey to accommodate Hood's trade request - and Johnson's request. Both got what they wanted. And Utah got a quality player, with "Jazz DNA" - i.e. a very competitive attitude and commitment to playing hard-nosed defense.

Really what Hood needs is a situation like he had at Duke and then with the Jazz: a primary scorer in place to take the pressure off. He still starts, but isn't the alpha.
