Yeah, this deserves its own thread. Kawhi is the PERFECT player to add to our current starting 5. We have the cap room to try to sign him, so we should swing for the fences. Obviously this deal would have to be extremely toxic to the Spurs in order to have a chance of them not matching. What could Lindsey do that would be allowed?

What if he gets a career altering injury? What's the benefit of signing him early when it's the same price as signing later? What if he somehow managed to play so badly this year that teams decided he wasnt worth the max any more? There just isn't any benefit, other than good will, to giving a max out anytime before you have to.

Can you think of an example where a team was absolutely convinced a player was worth the max and they chose to wait for them to become an RFA instead of just extending them the max before the season started?

I'm not saying there's a good chance at all that the Spurs wouldn't match, but I think it's ****ing weird that they didn't offer it to him already and am seriously curious as to why. If you think a player is a legit cornerstone to your franchise moving forward, you don't jerk them around.

There's no one here that will be saying we should wait till Gobert becomes an RFA to give him a max offer sheet.

Easy. They have a lot of free agents this season including Ginobili and Duncan. And if one of those guys(Duncan) would decide to retire the Spurs could possibly work under the salary cap. They then have about $7,5 Mil more in cap space because Leonards cap hold is just $7,235,148 and his max cap hit would be around $15 Mil.

And it's not like the Spurs need Leonard's good will. Leonard is probably just happy to be on the Spurs. He knows he is going to get maxed out either way. I mean, I'm sure he would have been extra happy if teh Spurs gave him the contract early, but he understands that it's a business.

Yes, it is likely they will pursue a big free agent and then sign Leonard. There was no reason to extend him last season and lose flexibility. To OP: there is zero chance we get him.

This... There were articles about it at the start of the year. They will give him the five year max. We could only offer 4. They will sign other FAs and then max Leonard it's already a done deal folks...
