Trey Lyles's Jumper

Overall I really like Trey Lyle's court vision, agility, and versatility.

His shot seems inconsistent though. His form looks pretty good overall.
I can understand why the Jazz think they can turn him into a stretch 4.

His shot sometimes seems to have an arc, but mostly flat from what I have seen.

I remember years ago our announcers were talking to Horny about working with Kyle Korver on his shot.
Korver was already a top shooter in the league but he was also streaky.
Korver talked about how Horny helped him improve his arc on his shot which made him more consistent.
Ever since that year Korver's percentages increased and he became much more consistent.
I know some of you will ask for a link on this Korver story but I am going off memory from game.
Maybe others can confirm my memory or a weird dream I had :)

Maybe the Jazz can help increase his arc so it's not a "frozen rope".

For you basketball purists..... What is your take on Trey Lyles jumper?

The skeleton of his form is fine. He has a tendency to "push" his shot though. Just has to focus on reaching up when he shoots and snap the wrist.

I was thinking the same thing. I like your description a lot.
Pushing forward rather then going up.

This is why I never liked Ian Clark. He pushed his shot forward which scared me with consistency.
Of course I say this on a night he hits a game winner lol

To me he's just forcing it. He's making the right decisions just not confident.

As he hits a trey lol. That's what I'm saying that was a confident stroke.

He needs to get his hands stronger and tuck in his elbow. His shot is smooth but it is clearly too flat.

Dennis Lindsay was taking about this with Locke during a game the other day. He said that lyles shot is great off of one or two dribbles, but flat otherwise. He said he just needs some time and work to recognize what to do better.

He needs to make it more often. Usually when he misses it I say to myself "That shot would have been better if he made it"

Most rookies struggle with their shots. Speed of the game thing. Some more then others. I do recall him shooting 73% at Kentucky. It's nerves and speed of the game. As he matures and gains experience the seed of the game will slow down. Lyles will be good. Just needs time and experience.

He lacks arm strength. The push in the shot comes from trying to get the muscles in the chest and shoulders to compensate for lack of arm strength. Lots of kids have this problem as they just aren't strong enough to get the ball to the rim, but it can develop into a habit and affect the shot even when the players is older and more developed. Might be his problem, and it is correctable as long as he has the strength.

His left hand twists when he shoots in an awkward way.
Hope he can fix that.

I really hope his shot comes around.

I love his ability to take guys off the dribble, run the floor on the break (even be the one initiating the break), and his passing.
I like his size and fluidity too. (Wish he was a little more athletic, but if he were then he probably gets drafted before us anyway)

If he can get a good consistent outside shot then we have a very good player on our hands...... If not, then meh. He will be decent backup

The Jazz have worked with players to widen their base when they shoot. Trey is straight up when he shoots and he doesn't shoot exactly the same way every time. I see promise, but he is going to have to put a lot of work into his shot.

I had the same thought about his athleticism last night. He's a very fluid athlete and runs the floor extremely well, but I was wishing he was more explosive. Like you say, though, if he were a 6'10"+ Aaron Gordon, he'd have been a top 5 pick.
