Utah Jazz: Is Rudy Gobert the Next Dwight Howard?

Utah jazz newsfeed, don't insult rudy like that.

I know I was thinking more like the next Shaquille or Kareem, or Akeem, but the best analogy at this stage of his career would probably be Bill Russell given his defensive prowess. As I see it Dwight was blessed with considerable athletic prowess but never exhibited the kind of drive and determination that Gobert has shown.

People forget how great Dwight was in his prime.

This ^^^

Cy is 100% right. He's been crushing it around here for awhile now. I don't always agree with his takes, but his knowledge and opinions are top notch around here.

As good as Dwight was in his prime, Rudy has a better attitude, better leadership skills and might be the better overall defender. Plus he's happy being the 3rd or 4th option and embraces pick and roll and put backs. Can't put a value on that tbh.

How do you say Superman in French? I'd be happy to have Gobert dominate like Howard did in Orlando. Not sure Rudy will ever be strong enough to physically overpower larger, stronger centers like Dwight did.

This. Tracy McGrady is fairly comparable on a psychological level. They even had similar trajectories playing for Orlando and being terrible leaders. The difference is that Dwight went to the finals. I think the problem is that people only jumped off the Dwight bandwagon in recent few years -- despite his legitimately incredible numbers it was apparent he was a gigantic boob midway through his Orlando run. Nobody saw it because it's like that really hot girl with a terrible personality (disorder) that everyone is oblivious to because of her good looks. So, yes, continue to say that we've all forgotten how good looking she was in her prime -- anyone with a brain:penis ratio over 1 never cared about her looks.

Some people are getting it. When I said it's insulting to rudy to be compared to Dwight I was talking about personality, competitiveness, leadership, work ethic, and on and on.

To Quote, the article was "comparing Gobert to the 2010-11 version of Dwight Howard. Dwight averaged 22.9 points (career high), 14.4 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks that year. That year he was named:

an All-Star
Defensive Player of the Year
Eastern Conference Player of the Week six different times
Eastern Conference Player of the Month twice
1st team All-NBA Center
1st Team All-Defensive
finished second in voting for Most Valuable Player
was top five in the league for rebounds, blocks, and field goal percentage"

Not sure how that's a bad thing to compare to.

Statistically of course not. He a douche though.

Because he did not live up to the expectations as he was not competitive enough to lead a franchise to the title or even try it.
