What's new

What's your favorite city?

I have done a fair bit of traveling the last few months (Houston, Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston) and have a couple more trips lined up with New Orleans in a few weeks and Miami in January. I, like anybody, really enjoy getting out and traveling so I pose to you all a question.... What's your favorite city and what's great about it?

I'll go first, I have found that I'm really liking the European style towns as San Francisco and Boston are my two favorites so far. Enjoyed just walking around SF and the various bookstores around town. Also the topography, in just being able to get high and look over the overwhelming beauty of the place.

Boston was great because it was small in area yet had so much packed in it. Neighborhood to neighborhood it was vastly different.

Any advice would be great as I would love to plan new trip to somewhere cool! Anybody been to Portland or Chicago? Would love to hear about it!

San Fran is my fav inside the states, I love the music scene there, and its fairly clean and the weather is always nice. Denver isn't bad, but the traffic sucks.

Victoria, BC is by far my favorite city anywhere.

I wish I could afford to live in either of those places.

Without a doubt, Seattle. I liked Boston, but it was to... what's the best way to describe it..., East Coast Gross? I don't know, but I felt like I needed a shower every night when I got to the hotel.

Seattle is awesome. Loved it. SO beautiful. The Seattle LDS temple is beyond spectacular, second only to the Nauvoo, IL temple. I loved St. Luis as well, but not the city part of it. Mrs. Trout and I drove from St. Luis to Nauvoo and it was the most fun I've ever had in a car. Beautiful old country. Loved it.

Stoner.

My favorite cities ive visited are Seattle and Chicago. Chicago is definitely my favorite though. I just love the big city atmoshpere and the challenge of navigating your way through the city on the L train. I'm going to be there for a few days next month. I'm going to see The Utes play Notre Dame and I'm staying in Chicago. Im hoping to see the bears vs vikings game the Sunday im there.

I really want to visit NYC and Boston.

Seattle. With San Francisco coming in a close 2nd.

I also love NYC, Denver, Salt Lake, Portland, and the biggest little city, Reno.

Huh. Denver's traffic is far lighter than San Francisco's. Unless it massively, massively improved since I lived out there.

Seattle has some of the worst traffic I've ever seen.

I agree with most of the choices above, except Reno. Are you kidding? San Diego and San Antonio (though I'm only talking about the Riverwalk area) are also pretty cool. There's something really nice about Tampa, too. The city that exceeded my expectations by the widest margin was Pittsburg. The approach from the airport is the most dramatic of any city in the world. You enter a long tunnel in the suburbs. The tunnel exits right at the junction of three huge rivers. Downtown Pittsburg glitters in the fork of the rivers to your right and the sports stadiums sit together in the fork at your left. It's a very cool view. I was there once during an NHL playoff run. Those people love their sports!

Honolulu has been my favorite. Actually, I don't have too many memories of the city itself. But the vacation there was awesome. To be able to drive all the way around the island and stop and play at any (all) places along the way and still make it back in time for dinner is outstanding. Pearl Harbor, The PCC, the surfing, snorkeling, etc. make it unbelievable. They had a huge swap meet in the parking lot of Aloha Stadium back when I went. Don't know if it's still there, but it was a blast.

Seattle is the ugly stepsister to Vancouver's Cinderella. Abroad I love Paris, Venice and Prague, although I've never been to Spain and I have a feeling that Istanbul rocks!

Here's a third vote for Barcelona, though I'd like it even more if I spoke Spanish. Or Catalan, or whatever it is they speak.

I do like Chicago, but it's the only city I really, really know. NY, Boston and SF are cool to visit, but I'd never want to live there. I love Washington DC too. And Vancouver BC is a great place, mountains, oceans, beaches etc - it's like a smaller Chicago with mountains. Though I was only there once about 25 years ago, but I'd love to go back.

This. There's lots of cities that I have enjoyed visiting but living there? Yikes! I'm just not into living the rat race on a day to day basis. When you have to get up, go to work, afford housing and food & fight traffic on a daily basis many of the cities listed become very unattractive.

Personally, I'd rather pull up and go live away from everyone else. I guess if I could choose any place I'd pick a tropical island away from the tourist spots. Snorkel, lay on the beach and drink cold beer all day. Yeah, I'm feeling it.

Hong Kong, great food for cheap everywhere. You can get by pretty well speaking English there as it was a British colony until 1999.

I love DC, I always enjoy my time in that area. NY has to be on the top of the list, although I would never want to live there for an extended period of time. Maui was amazing and I could for sure live there, paradise. I'm going to London in the summer, I'll let you know how that turns out, should be pretty rad.

Osaka, Japan.

I always tell people to go to Mumbai on vacation though. It's just so ****ing nuts there that it's almost impossible that you won't have a good time. It's not my favorite city because I wouldn't live there if given a billion dollars, but man it's one hell of an experience.

Then again, I'm with the people above that don't really crave the big city experience that much. Subway riding....long queues for any decent shop....bumper to bumper people traffic.....very controlled police environments......not my idea of living....but I love to visit new cities.

You guys should check out this guys Youtube channel if you are into travel. He does great camera work of a lot of cities and you get about as good as a feel for the places as you can through video:

Can't go wrong with Hong Kong, especially considering Macau and Shenzhen might as well just be considered part of it. Probably the most urban experience you can have.
