March - Women heritage
May - Asian Pacific Heritage
June - LGBT
September - latino Heritage
October - Disability Culture
November - Native American Heritage
Keep in mind I am not calling for a white heritage month. I just wont oppose giving them July or something.
Thanks for the rundown. Looks like they already have Jan, Apr, Jul, Aug, and Dec., as well as a decent share of Mar., Jun, Sep., and Oct.
That right there is the problem. There should be no heritage or history months. It should all be taught and celebrated all the time.
One could make the arguement that by giving the above mentioned groups specific celebration months you are placing them above the others. Or argue the reverse. That you are showing them who is truly the boss. That you will allow them a pathetic little month because you control the rest.
Race and racism will never go away because everyone continues to make it an issue in their attempts to even (or slant in some cases) the playing field. Only when race is ignored and unimportant will the field truly be even.

The problem is that I'm hard pressed to see who else but bigots would join a White Student Union. I mean honestly, who would this kind of organization attract? I'm inclined to think also that those who form this organization understand full well this dynamic, which suggests to me that this organization is little else than trying to put lipstick on the pig of racism.

To me that sounds more like a problem with you than the group.
If the group has racist ideas or actions then they should be denounced as such and kicked off campus. Them being a group by itself is not racist. If it is then the congressional black caucus is racist.

With due respect, I disagree. It's not a problem with me, it's a problem with who the target market is for this type of organization. Of, say, 100 people who might join such an organization, what % do you honestly believe are likely to be racist? I'd put the number at per near 100%. If correct, what else can we conclude that this is nothing more than a cover for a racist org?
In the abstract, I'd have no problem with it, but in practice, I'd bet the farm, plus my pension, that such an org would quickly become a haven for racists.
Whites as a group have never been an oppressed group in this country. NEVER. Blacks only recently have achieved something akin to full rights of citizenship but continue to face both overt and hidden racism in wide variety of ways, plus they continue to struggle to become fully integrated into the social and economic society of the country, due in part to lingering racism but also due in part to certain structural problems (some to which they unfortunately contribute). This IS NOT the case with whites as a group. Never has been. Thus comparing a hypothetical 'white Congressional Congress' to the Black Congressional Congress is a false comparison, at least in my opinion.
So, are you saying that those who do celebrate their race and are proud of their heritage should ignore it and regard it as unimportant. I think many persons of color would disagree.
This notion that race doesn't matter and we should all be the same is a product of American white guilt, IMO. It gives American white people an out on actually dealing with issues of race in this country. "We should all just be the same so race is no longer an issue." Well, race will be an issue in the U.S. regardless of whether you want it to go away or not. We're already seeing race issues morph and change. White Americans will have to deal with race issues just as much as people of color do whether we like it or not.
We're not all the same, and thats awesome.

It is not a false comparison. Both are groups that have a race requirement to join. No difference. I personally would not join them as I would see no need to join them. You are simply willing to think negatively of them based on what might happen. I am not. I will judge them based on what they do, not what they might do.

If that group has historically suffered, and continues to suffer, oppression, discrimination, social and economic marginalization, etc. then possibly (not definitely) Yes.
Note that this DOES NOT describe whites in the USA.

Again, what % of people who join this group do you really guess won't be racists of one stripe or another?
More, I simply don't agree with the concept of 'white culture.' It doesn't exist, and when used, is almost inevitably a euphemism for racist culture.
But I've made my case, so no need to argue this further. Feel free to reply and I'll leave it at that.
Like someone said in the video, this just seems like they are forming the group to laugh in minorities faces, kind of spoofing it. I'm for their ability to do it, but it's ****ing retarded as ****.
