This has been going on for a long time

If there was one I wouldn't want anything to do with it.

In the meantime, let's wait for One Brow to explain what "punching up" means.

sitting through 20 minutes of a college course is honestly enough to realize why this **** simply shouldnt happen. Exhausting, and classic Archibald.

Gonna go on a limb and assume that he thinks the students have every right to that union, given his right-wing stance on almost every other discussion he's been a part of that I've seen on this forum.

I think they all divide our country and society and do less good as a whole than the good they do for the individuals.

Yes I understand the history involved here and the "punching up" idea/argument.

I do understand the forming of these exclusive groups as a defense against racial discrimination. There should be a way to band together to defend yourself and collaborate to solve and or defend against those things. I'm not against them (race orgs)but in my utopia hope that these behaviors end, dream that they would be temporary.

It should be a two way street though and both allowed despite there being much less "need" in general for some races (Caucasian non latino) to form something like this.

I guess the questions becomes what the message is of the organization. Do they allow anyone to join, or are the exclusive? Are they promoting a good social agenda or is it a hate group? I don't think a group should automatically be condemned because it is a white organization, but it has to be carefully scrutinized because we have such a history of hate coming from similar groups. Not to say that non-white organizations should not have the same scrutiny. Hate is hate...

Hate crimes should also follow the same logic. There is a disproportionate amount of hate crimes (white on black) than the opposite, when of course many black on white crimes could be hate crimes and many white on black crimes are based on opportunity and note hate... I don't know that I have ever read about a black on white hate crime, but I would think there have to be a few cases out there.

If the first thing the white student union addressed was their privilege and how they were going to work to even the playing field for all students and give up their inherent advantages then I'd say it was a good thing. If they just wanted to preserve their heritage and talk about all the great things white people have done then I'd say it was pretty pathetic and borderline disgusting.

I don't disagree. I can stomach an ethnic minority organization trying to even things out for their group. I still don't like it and would prefer it if race stopped being acknowledged as a legitimate way to categorize people. But since the vast majority in the West seem to think it's a real inherent property of humans, I don't see that happening any time soon.

So people can't be proud of their heritage if they are white, but it is OK for people of any other ethnicity? What about in 15 years when whites are the minorities? Will it be OK then?

Being white and thinking that all the great things that have happened are because of our white heritage, ignoring the extermination of Native Americans, slavery, institutional discrimination, is pretty ****ing dumb, imo. And it is about the punching up vs punching down thing. Why, when you are in a position of privilege, would you need to go around hooting and hollering about how great it is to be you? I can tell you one reason, to prop up "your kind" and continue to discriminatory practices that keep "others" down. So yeah, it's distasteful to me. To put it in sports terms, it's like being a very bad winner.

To play the devil's advocate, how about other racial pride organizations? Every single ethnicity has its own history of atrocities. And I don't mean a little. Look at the history of the Aztecs or Maya. Or the role that African slavers played in slavery. Why can't Europeans be proud of their positive achievements if others can?

OK, how about a group that only promotes poor disadvantaged white people?
 
An interesting tidbit, in this country, essentially until the Civil Rights Act in 1964, the definition of White or Caucasian in this country was any race that is not black.

I think a group that supports the good things of a races heritage is not hammering people down. As stated by others, all races have committed atrocities. No one should celebrate them. It doesn't mean we have to ignore the good things we have done. I am definitely not ashamed for being white. If my ancestors did anything in the past that they shouldn't of, I may be ashamed of their actions, but I don't take that as a personal reflection of myself. Honestly, as long as we differentiate ourselves and have different advantages/disadvantages due to race, there will always be a disparity. We just need to be people, and care about everyone equally*. We should judge people based on what they do, now what they look like.

(*except Syrians and Gameface)
