Why the Celtics-Sixers trade talk does not affect Gordon Hayward's decision

I really disagree with this, why would Hayward want to go to a team where he has two top-3 picks, Avery Bradley, and Jae Crowder to compete with for minutes? Either Boston has another trade up their sleeve, or they're going to go harder after Blake Griffin.

Tony Jones should really look into the Celtics cap situation. If they trade for Butler they WON'T be signing Hayward. They won't have the ability to clear the necessary cap space. The only way they can get Hayward and another star like Butler is to sign Hayward first. Which means if the Bulls want a top pick this year for Butler it could throw a wrench in Boston's plan. Chicago won't want to wait. Plus, even if Boston could theoretically pull off getting Hayward and Butler they would have to gut their whole roster of almost all of their current talent not named Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford. Would Boston view that direction as worth it?

They could agree to a trade after free agency and just acquire the draft assets now to get it done...

If it is 1 for 3, lal pick, and other future assets they could go all in and move those assets after they have Hayward committed.

I'm not 100% sure Hayward would want to play with IT and butler but who knows.

Yep.

What if they were able to move IT, though? I don't think IT, Butler and Hayward is an ideal situation, but what if they moved IT for (???) in this scenario?

Hayward and Butler + who knows what? That might suck.

But I don't think Chicago will want to wait until after free agency to deal Butler. It takes away valuable rebuilding time. And if they are getting #3 in return it takes away valuable time getting that pick up to speed with their system.

I think Boston keeps 3 and gives future picks.

This article doesn't make any sense. Of course it matters. People thinking Boston getting a star to pair up with Hayward in their pitch to Hayward doesn't matter are delusional.

I'm with SCS on this. The odds of a pre-free agency trade agreement involving multiple teams' draft picks is unlikely to work out. If things fall apart, and something prevents the trade from going through (Gordon deciding not to go to the Celtics, for example), it would require all the teams to be good with the draft picks that were made for someone else. Possible, I suppose, but unlikely.

The Sixers are going to be really good.

This is a bit of a non sequitur, but I find the contract between Embiid (totally bought into the tanking process, so much so that he made it his handle) and Hayward (hated losing) to be interesting.

I think Boston will keep the #3 pick because they do seem to really like Jackson or Tatum. Then I think they will go after a trade for Butler with some of their other picks. Then I think their free agent target will be Blake Griffin. That gives them a really nice mixture of solid all-stars with big potential youth behind them. This roster is scary now and in the future:

IT/Smart
Butler/Bradley/Jaylen Brown/Rozier
Crowder/Josh Jackson/Jaylen Brown
Blake Griffin/Jerebko/Johnson
Horford/Zeller

With both Jaylen and Josh Jackson or Tatum I think there is less room and interest for Hayward. Especially if they get Butler or even Paul George or DeRozan. There is a huge hole at the PF spot no matter what they do though and is a bigger need for them than another SF that is a position they have a solid vet at and multiple young high draft picks. Which I think combined with IT as the main offensive weapon is the biggest reason Hayward wont be interested in Boston. Having Crowder/Brown/Jackson at his position is not appealing for him.

As SCS alluded to earlier, if they were to trade other draft picks for Jimmy Butler, they wouldn't be able to clear space for a max contract. Any trade they did would have to wait until after signing a max FA.

They would obviously also trade contracts along with those draft picks. My guess would be a few draft picks along with Bradley and Zeller. So guess my depth chart posted would be slightly different but those 2 are not a big part of that. They also could dump 1 or both of those guys to another team if Chicago didnt want them. That would give them room to take on Butler and have room for a max player just fine.

That would put them right around 70 million after they give up the rights to Olynyk and sign their #3 pick which is around 4 million.

So if Philly is now drafting Fultz it does remove them from the Hill market. But also the Lowry market. I couldn't find a post about it but how do we feel about Lowry

It's good for a lot of reasons. They are no longer in for Hill but also other Rubio and Bledsoe trade partners are now gone.

At this point if Fox lands in Sacramento hill basically has BKN as the bottom feeder and they probably don't offer him. We may actually be able to retain Hill reasonably and we may also be able to get Rubio or Bledsoe super cheap.
