If you broke it by geographical lines you would have what 8 or 9 teams in the west? The east is more densely populated and they have to put them near the bigger markets.

here is a map:

You know you could divide it north/south instead. That would put Utah, Denver and Portland in the "North" and the CA teams and TX teams in the "South".

So Portland, Utah, Denver, Minnesota, and Chicago could be the Northwest Division.

The fact that the Los Angeles Lakers, with Bob Delaney and Steve Javie officiating, lost a playoff game on their home floor in which their opponent scored the go-ahead FT's on a loose-ball foul that was subesequently followed by a no-call when Kobe was held (Kidd clearly was holding him around the waist) and got his feet tangled up (IMO not a foul - but suprised they didn't call it) still boggles my mind.

It's possible David Stern is doing his best to eliminate the possibility of any officiating conspiracy theories from this year's playoffs - since these will be the last games on everyone's mind when the league tries to regenerate fan interest after an extended lockout.

Now THAT'S a thought. That also means this is the worst year ever to implode.
