Will Trump #MuslimBan Affect the NBA?

With the new Trump Muslim Ban that affects the citizens of certain countries, NBA is left clueless about whether the South Sudanese players Thon Maker and Luol Deng will be affected by it or not so they consulted the State Dep. Because if those players go on the road to visit Toronto Raptors and try to turn back to the US, this will be the question.

The National Basketball Association has contacted the State Department to understand how President Donald Trump’s executive order to suspend immigration from seven countries could impact the league’s players.

The NBA has two active players, including Milwaukee Bucks rookie Thon Maker and Los Angeles Lakers veteran Luol Deng, who have Sudanese roots.

Deng and Maker are from the South Sudan, which became an independent country in 2011. While the Sudan is one of the seven Muslim-laden countries included in Trump’s immigration ban, the South Sudan is not on the list. Many top basketball prospects are from the South Sudan, not the Sudan.

Before a federal court in New York issued a ruling to suspend Trump’s order to ban, NBA spokesman Mike Bass issued a statement saying: “We have reached out to the State Department and are in the process of gathering information to understand how this executive order would apply to players in our league who are from one of the impacted countries.

“The NBA is a global league and we are proud to attract the very best players from around the world.”

The NBA has several global initiative programs, including Basketball Without Borders, that recruit, develop and invest in Sudanese players. Several top Sudanese players are attending American high schools and colleges on visas and could become NBA draft picks.

The NBA is holding a Basketball Without Borders camp at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans in February, where the NBA will showcase top international amateur talent from outside the United States. There are no players from the seven banned countries on the BWB invitation list, a league source told The Vertical’s Jonathan Givony.

Maker left the Sudan as a toddler with his family, landing in Australia and ultimately coming to the United States and Canada to play high school basketball. He holds an Australian passport.

Deng’s family left the Sudan at 5 years old, and came to the United States as a teenager.

So how exactly does it work? NBA players with non-US citizenship have green cards. Do muslims in general have no chance to apply for a green card now or only muslims from the 7 banned countries?

Pretty sure Luol Deng has a British passport

Dual citizenship, just like Maker. Not sure if Sudan or South Sudan though. And if they updated their passports after the split of South Sudan in case they have that one. Especially in Deng's case his family had to flee from political/religious prosection.

I have no clue how it works, but if you're a British citizen (as is Deng) using a British passport, wouldn't that "trump" your country of origin as far as entry into the U.S. is concerned?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the NBA wants to find out from the immigration agency, so away games in Toronto don't end horribly wrong for someone.

There was an article about some world class track and field star that will not be able to compete in America under this ban.

Don't the USA have an open Olympic bid for LA?

I didn't believe it, so I looked it up - yes, Summer Olympics in 2024

(they hosted in 1984 - wow, that'll be 40 years by then, holy cow)

LOS ANGELES >> The Trump presidency has created a major, perhaps insurmountable, hurdle for Los Angeles to overcome in its bid to secure a third Olympic Games later this year, Olympic historians said.

Los Angeles bid and city officials, already in a tight race for the 2024 Olympic Games with Paris, must now navigate through the remaining eight months of a global campaign against the backdrop of mounting concerns about the viability of an American bid within the international sports community and a growing number of foreign politicians.

Los Angeles 2024 and United States Olympic Committee officials spent much of the weekend working quietly behind the scenes with U.S. government officials to ensure Iran’s archery team would be able to travel to a World Cup event in Las Vegas Feb. 10-12.

I just wonder if Trump continues open racial discrimination, if that has an effect on the Olympic bid(Note: Not, whether it should - expectations for America are obviously higher than some questionable country like Qatar or Hungary. Personally I'd hate Hungary to win the bid for their extremist government)

according to the LA Times article I quoted, it sounds like PARIS and LA are the front-runners

Thank god. Just google Hungary for 10 minutes and you know a place you don't wanna visit right now. Their government is like the Eastern European and more crazy version of Trump.

Muslim/Islam isn't a race. But I don't really think you give a **** to differentiate.

The majority of Muslims have a certain race. The ban aimed to effect every citizen of the 7 countries regardless of religion - correct me if I'm wrong.
He's openly predujicial against Mexicans, how are his generalizations of Mexicans not racially discriminatory?

Also, Mexican is not a race either. I guess it would more correctly be referred to as a nationality. I'm not sure it's even really an ethnicity, since some Mexicans are indigenous Americans, some are European/Caucasian, and many are multiracial. But I get your point. It's prejudicial.

They do not have green cards. They have work visas.
