What's new

Sanders starting to kick some HC... whatever

The US has not been dragged to the right. It has never been on the left. It's only recently that people seem interested in going there. There has never been a serious candidate for the president who is as far left as BS.

I have a hard time believing that this country lags behind others in innovation, though it doesn't surprise me that someone could come up with a way of measuring it that doesn't put the United States on top.

If Nixon were alive today, he'd be considered a moderate liberal ... yes, we've been dragged far to the right. Read Hedrick Smith's book, Who Stole the American Dream, which documents this in fine detail.

If it was made up it wasn't me who did it. Thanks for pointing out another reason, though. I'm going to research this. Either way, it seems unfair that we are using a system where the vast majority of votes don't actually matter.

I promise you whoever told you that pulled it out of their ***. The Constitution gave state legislatures the authority to decide how electors were selected. Most states chose not to have a popular vote and selected the electors themselves. They were more than capable of holding a popular vote as they held popular votes to elect members of the state legislature and sometimes the governor(in some states, maybe most?, the governor was appointed by the legislature).

You may find this hard to believe but there was a time when the US didn't lead the world in military spending. In the mid to late 1930's Germany's military expenditures in relation to GDP was the largest in the world and about 5 times that of The United States, so yeah it makes sense that they had better weapons and a better trained weapons development staff than everyone else.

Which only serves my point-- but we can ignore military.

Let's look at chemistry, whether organic, quantum, inorganic, whatever. The foundation of modern chemistry was 100% spearheaded by the Germans, minus the random Russian or American like Mendeleev or Pauling.

This whole narrative of America's unquestioned superiority in everything is straight insanity-- especially when it's used to support an argument saying America shouldn't take hints from other countries; especially when full knowing that America's very constitution is a hodgepodge of principles adopted from, guess what, other countries!

Oh dog. This is the saltiest post ever.

Do everyone a favour and provide a robust metric to show innovation rate across nations & why America ranks first.

Why? Because he disagrees? If so then you are as salty as he is.

Germany whooped America's *** in innovation for decades. The stories about Americans leaving their weapons and grabbing German ones are particularly lol worthy, as are the stories about how many German scientists were swiped during/after the war years. And all of this with Germany becoming a country a full 105 years after America.

And also, America turned socialist ever since FDR. Speaking of political terms in absolutes is an excercise for the unsophisticated and unintelligent. You are neither, which is why it's troublesome when you do so.

What? American officers were issued an M1911(a very popular and capable handgun to this day) but ordinary infantrymen weren't issued a side arm. Many soldiers picked up Luger PO8s but they weren't dropping their rifles and exchanging them for German ones.

Yes.

If you think there is a serious candidate who was farther left go ahead and tell us who it was.

I don't know how you youngsters prove your points these days, but my post was an inquiry into your point, not a request for the stage to make my own. I would like to hear you give evidence for the claim you've made. That's all.

So you think I should list every candidate who has ever run for president and provide you with an analysis of how far left they were? Sounds like a fascinating way to spend my free time for the next ten years, but I think I'll go skiing instead.

no problem, Joe. Not all of my curiosities can be satisfied.

I'll file your claim into my mental filing cabinet under B

Good plan.

see, we're agreeing already.

I'm not trying to be a splinter. Should I have abstained from participation? I know this thread is several pages long, but I didn't see that you all had agreed on what Left and Right meant, either historically or contemporaneously. You seem slightly bothered or even hostile. I'm sorry to have ruffled your feathers.
