What's new

We seriously need to revisit Burks at the backup PG

We have our starting PG and we have all the talent we need at the wings and bigs when everyone is healthy. What we need is a solid back-up at the point. Dante is not ready yet and we're not sure if and when he will be. Mack and Neto, while both have done positive things, just aren't consistent enough and won't cut it if we are to make a run at a championship. So, while Dante develops or we get another candidate through the draft or trade, we should give the back-up minutes to Burks, or at least give it a try.

He's the fastest and most explosive player on the team, and the change of pace that he represents as a back-up will put other teams back on their heels. His ability to get in the paint will open up easy shots for Hood, Ingles, and JJ. He just needs to improve his defense. But he has the tools to do it. So, I say, let the experiment begin.

Pretty sure he is a better player than mack, neto, and exum. Is he a better point guard though? My answer is yes on that one too.

Should be a poll tbh.

Barring a trade I think this is the way to go.

As an ancillary benefit, this will "force" Burks to think of the other 4 players on the court and cut back on his "1 on 5" mentality which I'm sure drives QS bat **** sometimes.

So far in Burks limited time this year he has been a willing and very good passer. Last night he made quite a few very nice passes to open teammates who missed shots. (three of them were to open three point shooters. at least one, maybe two were to open neto who missed open threes and one was to lyles for an open three that he missed. also hit favors rolling to the hoop on a pick and roll which favors bobbled then corralled and passed to lyles for a layup. Just off the top of my head.)

When the playoffs come, teams start to compress their rotations and the fringe guys stop playing. Right now, Exum, Mack and Neto are fringe rotational players. Unless they trade for a veteran backup PG at the deadline, they should absolutely look at getting some of Burks minutes at the 1.

Gobert, Favors and Diaw/Lyles at 4/5 (Withey and Bolomboy out of the rotation)

Hayward, Hood, Ingles, Johnson (and some Burks) at the 2/3

Hill and Burks at the 1 (barring injury, Mack, Exum and Neto are out of the rotation)

You play your top 8/9 guys in the rotation, and none of our backup PGs are on that list this year.

As such, I think they should take a look at Burks playing as the backup 1 NOW to iron out any issues ahead of that.

Season is long so you'll probably have to give the plethora of back up pg's some playing time to keep guys fresh. Come playoff time, I think you roll with your best players which means Alec probably will play some pg. There is a chance one of the three backups improve their play giving them a spot in the playoff rotation.

Q is already headed in this direction, IMO. But, he's getting some good action out of his pawns right, so I expect him to keep using them while he can. Triple-wing is gonna happen, though. Plenty.

He's been better this year. There was one game specifically I though Burks was playing me first. But the last few games I've seen a guy trying to run the offense and playing well doing it.

I agree, though now may be a little much to ask until Hood gets back. Once Hood returns I want to see more of the 3-4 wing lineups.

all for it! he looked crisp last night!

see the username!!!! i was compelled to start posting here just to mention Burks should be playing PG (and that I thought a good C would drop in the 2013 draft despite that drafts awful rep at the time:cool:)

Watching the amatuer ranks as closely as I do I've seen just about every type of converted PG you can imagine. Trackign several of them now.. Burks stacks up well vs many IMO - He's got natural instincts and is more equipped athletically than almost all ofem...
