What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Let's pretend that we sign Tobias for the max. What the hell do we do for a point guard at that point?

Anyway, I’m in the Conley + Niko/Jabari > Harris camp.

Go find the 3rd really good player (doesn't matter the position) and then start mining the interchangeables as Gordon Chiesa calls them. This would maybe necessitate renouncing Favors, letting Korver retire and letting Rubio, Neto, and perhaps a couple of others go. This assumes Ekpe and Thabo ride off into the sunset. The GLeague foreign tryout camp becomes all important.

Isn't trading for Korver kinda screwing us now? If he retires aren't we on the hook for his salary? Even at just the cap hold its like $4M... That can be pretty significant.

I think we can waive and stretch his guaranteed money this year if he retires... which would make his cap hit like 1.1 Million

So was listening to Andy Larsens on the Ben Dowsett Jazz podcast... couple things I wanted to re-visit that I thought were relevant.

- We could have absolutely had Bjelica… Andy said he wanted to come here but we didn't have interest. My guess is we could have had him for something in between what Philly and Sacramento offered to him... so all that "we don't know if he would have come here" stuff is stupid dumb. Could have waived Thabo and Jonas and easily signed him for part of the MLE. He would have been a "sniper" at the 4 and on an extremely team friendly deal.

- We didn't go after any free agents... Joe Harris and some others were mentioned... we just wanted to keep our guys. Imagine had we signed Harris to full MLE and played hardball with Exum.

- Another complaint on last year's strategy... based on this year's end of year presser DL is clearly not opposed to keeping Favs and may be leaning towards him staying... Also, Favs said his option needs to be picked up... I think he knows what his market is and that it is less than the $17-18M he would get next year. Had we got him at just a slightly lower number then guaranteeing his salary next year is a much easier thing to do... or had declining salary (at most 8%) with maybe like a $1M guarantee to compensate him. Would he have walked if we came in at $15M and 14M. Carves just a little more "flexibility" especially if we did the same thing with Exum... is Dante walking if we offered 8-8.5M and had it declining? The basic mechanics of the 1+1s give us some flexibility but execution and details of those deals could have been better for us.

I really really like DL he has been mostly right about the big things which is super important. He's failed in some of the other smaller things, which is kind of frustrating. Whatever he does this offseason it better be good.

Larsen has thrown out the possibility that we trade Jae for Dragic, but that would be using cap space. Not sure if we waive and stretch Kyle, then sign Tobias, if we would then have enough space, and cap fodder to make up the delta between Jae's salary and Goran's salary. I also think Goran is washed.

this is why I like the idea of grabbing Conley now (if possible) then using exceptions or excess space to fill in the rest of the gap.

I think there's a good chance we move Donovan to point guard in that scenario.

Donovan
Royce
Joe
Tobias
Rudy

In that scenario I'd really want a good proven backup that isn't ded. I love Neto, but he's ded a lot too.

And this is why for all of his great work, he is on the chopping block to me. Don't believe your own press, and get high on your own supply. That **** is for fools.

Was he aware that the Jazz got their asses kicked by the Rockets and the Rockets weren't even the best team in the conference?

OMG we’re ****ed.

I'm a big believer in Alex Caruso, but I don't think he'll actually come that cheap. If you can somehow land Harris and then get Caruso with the Room MLE then that's an incredible offseason. I ain't holding my breath though.

I'm really worried about the Favors situation. It not a knock on him at all, but retaining Favors and making any significant changes/upgrades are mutually exclusive. It's kind of like you've got a Mustang (not really a car guy so sub that out with whatever floats your boat) that you've been working on since before you were married. You have some good memories with it, and it actually has some reasonable value. You work construction and need your Tacoma for work as it carries your essentials -- so not having a truck isn't an option. You've got 5 kids. Your wife has a Corolla. She's busy all day shuttling them to and from school, practice, and other stuff. You can't function with the Corolla because your kids don't fit in it. You can't sell your truck and get your wife an upgrade because you can't function at work without a truck. Your Mustang is cool. You enjoy taking it out on the weekends. It doesn't, however, provide any functional utility -- it's not being used (can't be used) in the mornings to get the kids to school, it's not being used to get you to and from work, it's just being used when you and one of your kids decide to go to the gas station for treats -- boy is that fun. You don't use it for anything essential. You've got a few neighbors who would be able to get good use out of it because they'd be driving it for both pleasure as well as necessity, whereas you want to hang on to it because it's a nice car and has good memories.

Your wife needs a ****ing Odyssey. It's time to let go of all the coolness having the Mustang brings and getting your wife something essential. Don't be a dumbass.

DL leaning toward being a dumbass.

I think maybe the biggest miscalculation is that one of Favs or Ricky could work with the other guys but require a particular partner. Ricky could likely be retained at a somewhat bargain deal if we had pivoted at the 4... if we had pivoted at the 1 then maybe you lock up Favs long term last offseason... the stubbornness to make this obviously flawed arrangement work means we throwing out Favs with Ricky or now retaining Favs on a one year deal and getting a mild upgrade elsewhere (something we could have done last offseason) and maybe taking a step back at pg.

We could have pursued free agents last offseason had we been willing to cut a few ties or likely could have moved Ricky for some value and then pivoted... there was more value in last seasons free agent crop imo. The best gms are aggressive and completely willing to trade good for great even if it carries some risk... I think DL is a good GM... but maybe he is not great?

Don’t eff this up DL.

I’ll get flamed for this but I’d reach out to Carmelo’s agent. No promises. Def not a starting spot unless he earns it. A one year deal. An expectation he busts his *** on defense and isn’t a black hole on offense. We need guys who can create. Threats. If we retain Udoh or Favors behind him, I could see it working.

U want to go Russell Westbrook type pg but less athletic and can't pass as well. That's how donovan will play at pg. So if you want to go backwards play donovan at pg. Go ahead lol

The “cap space” you’re working with in that scenario is the mid-level exception.

Doesn't "cap space" go up every year? Look, there's got to be two guys out there sick and tired of being on there current team and willing to take a chance with the Jazz squad as presenly constructed. FIND them!
