Utes 2011 Football Discussion

How can you call a team, who up to this point, hasn't won a game in the conference anything but a bottom feeder?
Well the Utes have played all the good teams (at least the good teams on the schedule). We'll see if they are a bottom feeder now that they will be playing the bottom feeders. My guess is the Utes will beat them all.

Absolutely top notch? God your homerism is nauseating. 35th out of 120 teams is hardly top notch. Great, it ranks in the top 30% of defenses when it comes to points against. That's like saying finishing 35th in the nation in the final polls is a top notch season. Solid, yes. Good? Perhaps. Top notch? Hardly.
Have you watched a Utes game yet this year? Probably not, but let me basically repeat what jazzman12 said a few posts ago:
The Utes have 14 turnovers in their last 3 conference games. Many of those resulted in points scored either on the return or shortly after.

For the Utes defense to even be #35 in the nation after the offense handed the other team 14 turnovers in the last 3 conference games is pretty dang good. I don't know where to look for this stat or if it is even kept, but I would bet that Utah is near the best in the nation in fewest points allowed per snap. Because even when they haven't turned it over, it's pretty much been 3 and out with very few drives. The defense spends way too much time on the field.

Yeah, top notch.

I'll be a man about this (you should try it some time salty; it's cathartic) and say that their defense is better than I'm giving it credit for. Utah ranks 18th nationally in opponent's yards per play at 4.7. Alabama is 1st at 3.1.

Nice job on the stat. Where did you find that? I looked for some defensive stats but all I could find was the points allowed ranking on ESPN's Ute clubhouse page.

Even that stat is a bit deceptive though, because there is no telling how Alabama would rank defensively if their offense was as bad as Utah's, or how good Utah's defense would rank if their offense was as good as Alabama's.

Not trying to toot the Utes horn here, but their offense has to have been among the worst in the nation ever since Wynn got hurt. They were pretty bad before he got hurt, but nowhere close to as bad as they've been since.

How many yards per play does their offense average and where does that rank (especially compared to the teams ranked ahead of them defensively)?

Utah is just 101st in offensive plays per game and 97th in yards per play. Awful.

Wow, so here are the stats on Utah, pretty horrible.
Giveaways per game: 116th in the nation for the year at 2.8 per game. 3.0 in the last 3 games (which includes the win at Pitt).
For reference, Alabama is 10th in the nation at 1.0 per game.

Takaways per game: Utah is 18th in the nation at 2.3.
For reference, Alabama is 68th in the nation at 1.6.

Utah's average time of possession: 67th in the nation at 29.26.
For reference, Alabama's is 16th in the nation at 32.43.

Punts per offensive score: Utah is 84th with 1.5 per game (1.9 in the last 3 games).
Alabama is 8th with 0.6

Looking at how futile Utah's offense is, I think it's pretty amazing they can actually finish with a winning record in a legit BCS conference and go to a bowl game. And it's even more amazing that the defense can actually be ranked among the best.

Link to the stats for anyone who cares. Lots of interesting info there:

You beat me.

Awful doesn't even begin to describe it. There is a very good chance that fans who post here may never discuss a worse offense. No yards per play, tons of turnovers, no time of possession, just brutal in every facet of the game on the offensive side of the ball.

Even the haters who "expected" Utah to suck could not have expected Utah to possibly be the worst offensive team in the nation.

Keep in mind, those offensive numbers include a 54 point explosion against BYU back when the starting QB was healthy. It's been much worse since then.

To those that are saying the U is making mid majors look bad, I know that is what people with agendas are and will say but I'd just like to point out, this team wouldn't win the MWC best case would be 2 or 3 losses.
It's good to know all other college teams play and live in a vacuum, their players never graduate or move on to the NFL and the previous years success automatically means the same thing from here to eternity.
I mean look at FSU and Miami they always are in the championship bowl game like they were in the 90's right and USC has been winning all of them since OJ right they never how down years from then until Bush they won every single year. I'm sure Texas they've been great the past 5-6yrs I'm they never had down years previously and same can be said for Alabama their great now and NEVER had one down year since Bear Bryant, they've won it all every year.

Utah's offense didn't score all of those points.
Yeah I know but they are counted in the Utes offense stats. The point is the Utes defense is better than the stats indicate, and the Utes offense is worse than the stats indicate.

Things should start to even out now that the schedule gets soft though.
