Utes 2011 Football Discussion

You know what I love? I love to see "(except USC)" after all of Salty's lofty predictions and statements. I'm serious, it really warms my heart.

You know, Karl Malone was the greatest PF of all time! (except Tim Duncan)
I think most predictions from before the season began (and before all of Utah's injuries) had Utah finishing behind USC. USC is not eligible though, so I don't really care about them.

Even so, Utah lost to USC at the Coliseum on the last play of the game. If you think USC is on a much higher level than Utah right now, there's probably nothing anyone can tell you except we'll see next year (in SLC).

Great argument. (except it sucks)

It doesn't suck as much as your analogy. A better analogy is: Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron are the best home run hitters of all time (except for Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire).

Either way, USC is irrelevant to my point in that post. They don't matter as far as the Utes division standing, regardless of how good or bad they may be.

Score before the last play of the game:
USC 17
Utah 14
Score after the last play of the game:
USC 23
Utah 14
How exactly is this losing on the last play of the game?

Because Utah had the ball in scoring position (down by 3) on the last play of the game. Yes, they turned it over and USC scored on the play. That doesn't mean Utah wasn't in position to win that game on that last play.

Yeah, I gotta back Salty on this one.

The Utes did lose to USC on the last play of the game.

You can argue (I'm guessing this is your rationale) that USC was ahead before the play, and ahead after the play. That's true. But, Utah started that final play with possession, and the opportunity (and a fairly good one a that - not a hail mary type chance) to win or tie (and go to overtime with momentum) with that play. Thus, the game was lost on the final play.

But it's certainly possible to sit here and split hairs. The fact of the matter is, USC won. But they did not dominate Utah all game long. Utah mad a very close game out of it.

Until I see your definition of how things went down on dictionary.com, you'll just have to be wrong.

I might not understand the tiebreakers correctly, but why does ASU have to lose 2 games? If both ASU and UCLA go 1-1 and Utah wins out, wouldn't that set up a 3 way tie? Utah>UCLA>ASU>Utah.

If you're already losing before the last play of the game starts and after the last play of the game you're losing by more, how do you lose on the last play of the game? I'll never understand how you can argue Utah lost on the last play of that game. I could see your argument if Utah was up 3 before the blocked FG was returned for a TD, resulting in a 3 pt. loss. But not when they were already trailing. But whatever you need to sleep at night I guess.

How about "they put themselves in position to get to OT on the last play"?

Whatever I need to sleep at night? Really?

Well, I'm not interested in arguing over semantics. I'm perfectly okay with you disagreeing.

That one I understand, since it's true.
If they were in a position to get into OT on the last play of the game, wouldn't that mean they lost on the last play of the game?

Nobody knew who was going to win that game until after the final play. In fact nobody even knew the final score until several hours after the final play.

They were in a position to GET INTO overtime, not already heading there before the last play. That's a big difference. In my mind, if they had been tied or ahead on that last play and USC had scored, they lost on the last play. Not when they were already losing.

They were in a position to GET INTO overtime, as you say. Therefore, they had not yet lost the game, as I say.

And technically, they were not only in a position to get into overtime, they still had time for a shot or 2 at the end zone. It was first down from the 24 yard line with the clock stopped and around 11 seconds left.

So basically every losing team, technically loses the game on the last play of the game. For instance, Utah lost to Cal 34-10 on the last play of the game. Before the last play, they had not lost yet.

Am I following your logic correctly? Utah beat UCLA 31-6 on the last play of the game. The Colts lost to the Saints 62-7 on the last play of the game. I get it.

By the way, Salty, when will your new dictionary come out? I would like to download it, because I know it won't come out in print.

BYU lost to Utah 54-10 on the last play of the game. I like playing this.

...every losing team, technically loses the game on the last play of the game... Before the last play, they had not lost yet.

To be perfectly honest, this exact thought crossed my mind.

But I think I'm going to stick to my guns with the tenacity of a, umm.... oh, some sort of tenacious animal. Can't think of one, off the top of my head.
