Utes 2011 Football Discussion

The Utes winning*the South looks like a real possibility and there are going to be a lot of people eating a big plate of Salty crow, myself included. ASU has fallen apart and UCLA is not going to beat USC. The Utes, with all their problems early in the year, are sitting pretty to win* the right to get their asses handed to them by Oregon. Or Stanford.

* USC is not eligible to win the division.

I would be on that list. Good gravy, I sincerely hope it doesn't happen.

If the Utes are going into the last week of the season with a real possibility to win the South, lots of people should already be eating crow.

Whether S.I. was correct or not in their prediction, now we know it was absurd to completely dismiss Utah's chances in the preseason. A healthy Utah team would probably have wrapped the division up a long time ago.

We saw USC prove they are right there with Stanford and Oregon (close win against Oregon, close loss against Stanford). And we saw Utah prove they are right there with USC when healthy (close loss). With as many players as Utah should be returning next year, the sky is the limit.

The fact that Utah is on the verge of winning the division with the worst offense in the PAC 12, and probably the worst starting QB in any of the FBS conferences, should really be concerning to the haters. What will happen next year when Utah returns the RBs, receivers, most of the O line, most of the defense, and has a decent (or even good) starting QB with a good backup QB?

I think the haterz just need to expand their hate prism to include the Pac 12 as a whole and then they'll still be able to be haterz, correct, and be free of Salty guilt.

Utah sucks....but the Pac 12 sucks more. I think that's how you do it.
Well the PAC 12 has 2 teams in the BCS top 10 right now. That might even be 3 teams in the top 10 if USC was eligible to be ranked in the BCS (there are 3 PAC 12 teams in the AP top 10).

God damn it I ****ing love you.

I am in shock that the Utes could still win the south. How epic would it be to be in the Rose bowl as an 9-4 team? Not that I really think that will happen. But good god to just be close after the way our season started is hilarious as hell.

Whether Utah ends up playing for the Pac12 title or not, I think this has to go down as one of Whit's best coaching jobs ever. This team was seriously left for dead 4 weeks ago and there was no real reason to think they'd be able to recover. This is about as proud as I've ever been of a Ute team.

Considering the lousy QB we had and even have now, I have to agree that if they beat Colorado and go to 8-4 with a 5-4 conference record then I think they deserve a lot of credit. Did they possibly end up shooting themselves in the foot with a couple 5 turnover game losses and a 4 turnover game loss? Sure. If they get into the championship game then I fully expect a loss, but it was a nice year for Utah.

ULLMAN, Wash. — John White IV continued his pursuit of Utah's single-season rushing record in Saturday's 30-27 overtime victory at Washington State.

The junior rushed for 186 yards against the Cougars, pushing his yardage total to 1,377 on the year — surpassing Darrell Mack for third place on the all-time list and moving him to within 20 yards of passing Dameon Hunter for second.

White enters Friday's regular-season finale only 130 yards away from Carl Monroe's school record set in 1982.

"Once he gets going he's unstoppable," said Utah quarterback Jon Hays.

Although White had a workmanlike 49 yards in the first half, his productivity shot upward after getting flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the third quarter. Needless to say, he wasn't very happy about the call.

"I'm a little firecracker out there. I'm not going to lie," White said. "But I've got to maintain my head and just go out there and play and forget about all the crap out there that happens."

White managed to do so, rushing for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 3-yard run, the second on a 56-yard burst down the left sideline that required some fancy footwork on the snowy turf.

"It wasn't too bad. I just kept my balance," White explained. "I used to Pogo Stick back in the day, so I just kept my balance and that was it."

White kept going and going and going — nearly setting a different school record along the way. He carried the ball 42 times, the second-most in program history.

"He gets stronger as the game goes on," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said while guess-timating White's carries as being around 30. "I'm glad he's on our team."

Monroe holds the carries record with 45 rushes against UTEP in 1982. White, however, topped Brandon Warfield's 40 attempts against BYU in 2002 for second on the list.

I love John White

Man I was so disappointed in the offense in the first half reminded me of the Cal game minus all the TO's. I'm pretty sure for awhile there they had more penalty yards then total yards and the D stepped up and got 3 INT's in the first half not only did they not manage to get a first down on any of them they actually went backwards (mostly do to penalties) after the first two INT's but hey they did manage to get 8-9yrds on that third INT. The second half didn't start any better either with back to back fumbles on the opening drive and then again on the next possession.
They so looked like they were playing not to lose/screw up in that first half and granted the weather was partly responsible but in the 2nd half they played a little better and the play calling wasn't quite as conservative.

But a win is a win is a win and I sure hope weather permitting they can open it up a bit more and are able to run up the score a bit against the Buffs so I don't stress my heart out anymore then it will be with all the turkey and other food I'll be eating.

We talk about John White being a god send for the Utes but I think alot of that love needs to be shifted to the Ute's Oline and Coach Davis. Injuries had this unit scrambling big time in the fall and since then they've really become a strong unit. Just another thing to be excited about for next year: Bergstrom and Cullen are the only seniors on the entire 2-deep Oline depth chart, and due to the injuries forcing Utah to start a variety of different guys, they'll be able to field an O-line next season with 4 or 5 players who have all seen action as starters. Not to mention the return of some promising youngsters who got hurt during fall camp like Isaac Asiata.

The Utes will easily beat Colorado.
Colorado is 96th in rush defense, and allow 5.2 ypc.
It should be another good game for White.

I'll be honest here...when it's Thanksgiving time that's usually the time my hatred for BYU almost explodes. Having a hard time building up hate towards Colorado.

A few of the Bowl "experts" out there are projecting Utah in the Alamo Bowl against Oklahoma. A couple of thoughts on that:

-How amazing is it that in a year in which Utah starts out 0-and-4 in conference, they still may end up in the Pac's 2nd highest bowl (in terms of payout) against a premier national power?

and...

-Oklahoma would be a nightmare match-up for Utah.
