Jazz Offseason Plan

It is kinda funny how we spent all last summer complaining about perimeter defense. We were right, we can't drive a cone. The only change is that the guy who was supposed to address that need (Oni) might not be back.

Well that guy isn’t an NBA player.

I agree we haven’t done enough to address perimeter D, but people that think we’ve done nothing aren’t giving Gay his due. Gay helps perimeter defense 3-5. We need a guy that can 2-4 guy on a minimum or in a trade. Then every need will have at least been addressed.

Whether we should have flipped Joe or Bogey for someone starter level is a different question entirely. I am fine with taking the less drastic, budget approach through the deadline and reevaluating, but we should consider moving someone then for starter level perimeter defense unless things are just gangbusters by that point.

In order to have the best chance at a title possible, I think we still need to add a rotation level gaurd/wing defender.

Here are the SG/SF with a Deffensive RAPTOR above 1.5 and a total RAPTOR above 2.0 (exluding stars) :

Derrick White, Nic Batum, Fred Van Vleet, Danny Green, Deanthony Melton, Bogdon Bogdonavic, Furkan Korkmaz, Derrick Rose, Jae Crowder, Kyle Anderson, OG Anunoby, Ben Simmons, Mattise Thybulle, Lu Dort, Jarred Vanderbilt, Robert Covington, Alex Caruso

Anybody that would work here that we could get through trade?

Full disclosure: I'm a Jazz Fan, not an NBA fan. I typically only watch players from other teams when they play the Jazz.

Vanderbilt is a UFA who's very gettable right now.

We’re not going to be able to add anyone on that list this offseason unless Ingles/Bogey are getting moved, and it appears they are not.

Guys we could realistically add on a budget are Winslow, Ennis, Nwaba, or Stanley from office.

I’d put my money on Winslow being thr one with the Heat (Wade/Whiteside) connections.

Yeah I was thinking trade. I think it's time to give up some offense for defense. I don't think the minimum contract players would beat out one of our current guys for a rotation spot, so their defense wouldn't really help at all.

The guy on that list that I'm guessing is completely ungettable would be OG Anunoby. I don't think Toronto wants anything that we have though.

I agree with you 100%. Seems the Jazz don’t agree with us though. I’m just operating in the realm of what’s likely to happen.

OG Anunoby is the Platonic ideal of exactly what we need and what everyone in the league covets.

So I went through all the rosters and salaries to see what could meet our needs with the Favors TPE. I don't think there's really anything out there. The only two that I thought maybe would be Kris Dunn from Boston (some talk of him maybe being moved again) and Justin Holiday from Indiana.

@Handlogten's Heros you got any names?

So I think just trying to grab a guy in free agency who would essentially be a Royce insurance because if he goes down it could look ugly. We're obviously going to have a guy with a lot of flaws, but yeah I'm okay with RHJ or Winslow or Ennis. I wouldn't hold much hope out for the TPE.

Maybe Korkmaz the most available for what we have to offer? Or Melton? Melton's a 1/2, not a 2/3, however. And I'm not sold on Korkmaz as a defender. Not sure what we'd offer (anything I can imagine would just be shuffling the deck chairs, I think).

Markkanen if that situation doesn’t resolve. Send every 2nd round pick we have left.

Or Bogey.

Or something. I cannot be talked out of Markkanen until he is really bad on our team.

I believe he just re-upped.

Aren’t we capped out from using the TPE because we signed Gay?

From Tony’s posts on Twitter, the team isn’t doing anything other than signing a minimum wing, and that’s a 50/50 proposition.

I think we need to start hoping that Forrest and Butler will live up to their defensive potentials. And then also hoping we sign Bey, and he does as well.

Jaden McDaniels......

No. We can still use the TPE, it just means that we're going to pay a lot of tax for whoever we pick up.

I believe the last time Tony said this we signed the guy within 24 hours. Can't remember who that was. Ersan?

I don’t think this is doable at this point because of the hard cap issue. The only path would be for him to return to Chicago for the qualifying offer (or other agreed upon contract) and then to acquire him vis trade once he becomes trade eligible during the season.

I’d still like to waive Oni in favor of Smokes. If we could have turned Smokes and Thomas into one player. Frank Thomas.
