Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Wow.....

How does Rick Neuheisel pull his team together to at least make the game against Oregon somewhat competitive? They seriously look like a scout team out there.

I thought it was kinda funny how during the USC/UCLA game they gave the Ute kicker a Pac-12 award for his performance against Wash St....

How did Utah not destroy Colorado by at least 3 TDs?

What the hell was Coach Whit and his staff doing this past week? Did they even have practice?

How do Ute fans feel about this season? Especially if it ends up being a blowout against a MWC team in Vegas? Seriously, how do you feel about your season?

As an Aggie, I think one can only think of... "What if?" What if they would have opened up with a "w" against Auburn? The whole season is changed.

As a Cougar, one can only think of, "What the hell are we doing? Where are we going? What a mess..."

As an Ute, how do you guys feel? What's needed to win a trip to the Rose Bowl? What do you feel about the coaching staff?

I think with Rich Rod coming into town, USC coming back, UCLA making coaching changes, and AZ St. making coaching changes (most likely), I think it's probably safe to say that the south division is going to get a lot stronger in the next few years...

LOL...

Ironic...

Utah got out of the MWC... To only play in the Vegas bowl... And to be railed by 20+ against a MWC opponent... LOL...

Well, at least getting beat by TCU or Boise by at least 3 touchdowns is still better than being Independent...

Since Boise and TCU are both heading out the door maybe Hair can get Wyoming into the Vegas bowl. :)

valid questions but quite frankly too depressed to answer after seeing UCLA lose 50-0

UCLA firing there coach might make them play harder.

As an Ute? That doesn't sound or look right.

But as a fan of the Utes this has been a successful season in my eyes. I'm shocked we won 4 games in the PAC with no QB to throw the ball and a one dimensional offense. The Utes should be okay in the long run but we NEED to get QB's int he program that can read a defense, audible and notice where a blitz is coming from. That was the only thing holding the Utes back this season. We had the RB in White that could handle the rock. He still got 1405 yards while facing 8-9 man fronts. He was less than a 100 yards away from the Utah all time record. If Wynn can stay healthy or we find another QB that can throw John White should be more dangerous than he was this year.

We have the WR's that have speed and quickness to do some damage we just don't have a QB that can throw a mid range route or a flat route or a long ball with out throwing it short every time.
We are bringing in 2 QB's in this class that are suppose to be really good. But we need someone right now that can back up Wynn. We'll have Wynn, Hayes ( not a d1 qb) Shreve(so) Wilson (fr) Hansen (fr).
If we go into next season with only these guys and Wynn gets hurt again we'll be worse than this year.

Keep in mind, I'm not trolling. I'm actually seriously curious how Ute fans view this season. Quite honestly, I can't see how you can't look at it somewhat negatively. If you had a decent QB, you easily could be playing in the Rose Bowl. If you had played against Colorado with minimal effort, you would have been in the Pac-12 Championship game.

Having seen USC, who knows when Utah will have that chance again? Kiffin's USC program looks pretty damn scary. I think they could give LSU a run for their money right now. The way those freshmen WRs are running deep and Barkley is launching it, they just look unstoppable. One can only think that USC's program is going to remain a top 3 program (as they have been the past decade).

As someone living in this state, I want something to get me excited!

The Jazz are in lockout, BYU is too busy thinking they're Notre Dame and pissing off all these conferences that they should be crawling on their hands and feet ready to join.

Aggies sucked this year. Should have been something special.

While Utah choked in Ron McBride like fashion. I mean, a loss to Colorado? In Salt Lake? What the hell?

I feel okay about the season. Yes, there were missed opportunities. But it wasn't a failure by any stretch. Finishing the season middle of the PAC (ha!) is okay, especially factoring in the circumstances that accompanied the season.

Whittingham is fine. Replacing him would be a mistake. I'm also very comfortable with Sitake running the D. Norm ran a conservative offense, but largely because of personnel issues. He did well with what he had, IMO.

You'll have to explain the logic behind the surety of Utah trending downward while the rest of the south inevitably trends upward. All these coaching changes? I see that as an advantage for Utah. Rich Rod. What has he done lately? Run Michigan into the ground? Arizona needs more than just a name at HC. They have some rebuilding to do. And USC is not "coming back". While they were clearly the cream of the south division this season, they may or may not have Barkley next year, and they will be losing scholarships for the next three. Aside from not being eligible for a bowl, they have not started to actually feel the full extent of the sanctions. Perhaps they can survive on prestige alone, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Maybe I'm looking at the situation through crimson colored glasses, but I see more to be encouraged by than worried about. Utah will be fine. The move to the PAC 12 was the right move, regardless of how long it takes to get to the Rose Bowl.

Where did I say that?

What I actually said was:

If you want to take that as a "downward trend" for Utah, then be my guest.

I was merely expressing the opinion that the S. division pretty much sucked this year. Look at who's playing in the championship.

I don't believe the division will be this bad or worse. Honestly, it only has one way to go. Depending on what Az. St. and UCLA do, things might change quicker and bigger than you imagine. Just think if UCLA or Az. St. were to hire someone like Mike Leach.

And as long as you have USC in your division, the championship will always have to go through them. Barkley or not, that team is going to be reckoned with forever.

Other than the Lone Peak QB Hansen, who else is Utah bringing in?

Anyone else see Hansen play in the State Championship? He was a one man team....

Does Utah start a freshmen over Wynn?

Utah is most likely, going to the Vegas Bowl, right? If you had to choose, which opponent would you rather face? Boise or TCU?

I may have invoked a bit of hyperbole, but it's amusing that you don't seem to realize how transparent you are.

When did that happen? I totally missed that on the scoreboard.

Keep in mind, I'm not trolling.

Clearly.

That's fine if you think that the Utes will make a game against TCU or Boise. I don't. And I doubt many Utes believe they have much of a shot against Boise or TCU... And you want to call me biased? If the Utes win, I'll take ya out for a sandwich, does that make you feel better?

I'll stop short of calling this a straw man, but you are a little off point here.

I feel like I've been very realistic about the utes this season. But as a fan, I am allowed to hope for the best, I think.

BSU and TCU are both ranked, and either would certainly be the favorite over Utah in a bowl game. I wouldn't bet on Utah right now. But beating Boise or TCU, however unlikely, is not out of the realm of possibilty.

Your real question seems to be, was this season a success or failure for Utah? I'm just saying that it isn't markedly either. There were issues, but there was also a lot to be encouraged about.

Anyway, I gotta get to church. I'll pray for ya. Later.

Utah will be going to the Alamo,Holiday or Sun bowl. I don't think the Vegas bowl will have chance to pick Utah.

I coached against Hansen for years and have seen plenty of film on him. I don't think he's a D1 QB. He's a D1 player. Maybe a WLB or saftty. But he's not a QB. I guess he could develop into one but he has no clue how to read a defense. Absolutely none. Nice arm but not very accurate. Throws a lot of balls up for grabs. Not very good in the pocket. Great runner but takes off way too soon.

He's a kid you give a scholarship to as an athlete and then find a spot for him.

Interesting. Obviously the utes need a competent QB, ASAP, and those are not standing around on every street corner. Would you say Hansen has the capacity to develop those skills he currently lacks, or is he too far behind to make himself truly useful at that position within his window of eligibility?

There's the possibility of a JC transfer. And possibly Tyler Shreve.

As far as Hansen, I don't really know anything about him. But I don't know that you can have the book written about him at his age.

Whatever the case, I have a tough time imagining that the situation could be worse than what the Utes had this year.

Unfortunately, I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. Utah should and will only improve I think.

Folks from Utah tend to focus on Chase Hansen being Utah's big QB recruit, but Travis Wilson out of San Clemente is a much better QB prospect IMO. He was invited to the Elite 11 QB camp and while he didn't make the final 11, from all accounts he had a very nice showing there. He's got NFL size, and IMO is a legit D1 QB. I believe he's on track to graduate early which means he could be at Utah in time for spring ball (a big plus if he hopes to start as a Freshman).

Here's his Junior year highights:

I think Utah's best possible option for next fall is that Wilson comes in and shows enough to start as a Freshman. I know that sounds dicey, but having John White playing behind an experienced line along with what should be another strong defense, Wilson could be a real nice playmaker when needed.

Any update on that injured lineman? I know they said he had full movement, so I assume everything was okay. I'd guess it was a nasty stinger?
