Trade deadline discussion

I tried that idea but somebody made a good point that SA probably doesn't want JC. Maybe send Sato to SA, JC to NOLA and we get Thad.

Yeah that's how I had it in my 4-teamer. I think we should get some assets for JC from NOP. Should be able to send some of those SAS to make it worth their while.

This is floating out there. If the Jazz were to move Bogdanovic, they'd need a starting-caliber, 2-way wing coming back. Hence, I think this would have to be a 3-team trade with a guy like Harrison Barnes coming back.

Yeah by itself that's a terrible trade.

David Locke just dedicated an entire segment of his morning podcast today to talk about Marcus Smart and acknowledged the trade rumor.

A number of random thoughts:

- I remain somewhat skeptical on Smart. I like a lot of stuff but the offensive inefficiency is likely a pretty big problem, depending on who you’re subbing out.

- Separate from the above, I’m also skeptical about a Bojan move, depending on who we get, as it’s going to be a bigger hit to our overall offense than people think.

- Making the trade be Bojan for Smart may be catastrophic on its own.

- In an ideal world, I’d swap out Royce for Smart and that would be an upgrade in all ways. Royce is our third in minutes and he starts and closes. He’s different than the rest of our guys and he’s often overlooked as an upgrade spot because “we need more guys like Royce, not less.”

- It could be really good to move Bojan for Smart if you’re able to reroute the trash salary we get from Boston, +/- JC, and whatever draft compensation they give us, to the Clippers for Marcus Morris. Then that makes you legit because Morris can fill the offensive void of what a lot of things you lose with Bojan.

- Our team is staying afloat (if you want to call it that) by our offense. Don’t overestimate the impact of upgrading just the personnel. We’re still prone to the same mental collapses even with improved defense. We’ll just have less offense to sustain that. As long as you have Quin, you will have those vulnerabilities. KOC used to trope about how “sometimes the best move is no move.” Well, sometimes the best move is firing the ****ing coach. We’re all going to pretend that an offense for defense swap is going to move the needle but I’m telling you it won’t move the needle on our vulnerabilities unless we’re able to massively upgrade (like getting both Smart and Morris).

- The only other alternative is if you upgraded Royce’s spot to Smart, which is only theoretical.

- Easiest move is firing the coach. Last year was kind of like booking a once-in-a-lifetime trip with your buddy to Machu Picchu. You do all the work to get there, pay all the airline and travel costs, pay for food, and your buddy handles the reservation. When you get there, you find out that your buddy didn’t actually make the reservation to go to Machu Picchu and even though you came all that way, you won’t be going to the destination you’ve been planning all this time. If you vent about this, all of his ******* friends tell you “bro, look at the awesome trip you got to go on!” This is exactly what DL did to us last year, and it’s exactly what Quin is going to do to us now and next year, and soon our window will close. Eventually you have to learn that it’s better to fire your ****ing friend and make those reservations yourself, even if you have to take the trip alone or even find someone else for company where you’ll carry their weight.

Tl;dr a move for Smart could sink Quin’s ability to do what he does. Same thing for trading Bojan. The combination of the two could spell disaster for Quin not having the right arrows in his quiver. That’s not necessarily an argument for what may be the best roster in theory, but you have to take into account the coach and what he’ll actually do and not what we think he should theoretically do. We’re spinning our wheels with him and by the time we’ve “seen enough data,” it will be too late and we will have had 2-3 years here of a real window that’s squandered by your ******* friend not making the reservation because he was coasting.

I think I'm the biggest Clarkson fan on here but honestly people don't want to play here in Utah and that being said he does and he came back. We shouldn't trade him because quite honestly people will just come and then go when their contract is up.

Another crazy idea....

Boston gets Bojan and 2nd rounders

Cavs get Conley

Hawks get Rubio, Schroder, Butler, a 1st from Boston and a 1st from Cavs

Utah gets Collins and Smart

Boston clearly wants/needs someone like Bojan to help Tatum and Brown.

Cavs want reinforcements for their unexpected playoff run. Conley helps replace injured Sexton and Rubio.

Hawks are worried about finances with Trae, Huerter and Capella starting extensions next year. Rubio and Schroder are expirings, and the 2 first rounders are big for them.

We get two pieces for the long haul. Signed and set.

Just going to reemphasize I think trading Bojan for Smart is a bad idea. I think he's as important if not more to the offense than Conley, I might be alone in that.
You'd also need to get a rotation level or starter forward out of Clarkson to replace Bogie to make it work, and I think Clarkson probably has negative value around the league.
Maybe this is a hot take, but Conley for Smart shouldn't be off the table. It really doesn't make sense to bring Smart off the bench, especially if Clarkson is still here.

I agree 100%. Bojan is more important than Conley especially come playoff time.

Having Conley and Clarkson is just redundant. Been saying that for years now. Clarkson is unique because he does have games where he makes a huge positive difference, but he's perfectly happy coming off the bench. And his value is probably lower and I don't like selling low.

Just caught it. He mentioned that while he's not a deadly shooter, but he hits shots in the clutch. That is severely lacking on the team.

I also double checked, his salary is a concern but it might be overblown - it goes for the next 4 years but every year except the last is less than what Bogey makes.

I think Locke's concern about Smart's presence ruining Gobert in the pick and roll is overblown, he's actually pretty good in the PnR.

Bingo. As I think about it, a DM/Smart/Clarkson guard rotation sounds pretty doable to me.

The Bojan/Smart/Schroeder trade in isolation makes zero sense. We are adding two more guards and creating a giant hole on the wing.

We would have to be packaging Clarkson/Schroeder and the picks we get for a wing. What starter level wing is available for a package like that?

I would only do the Bojan trade if we get a protected 1st from Boston. It could be completely lottery protected but I think it needs to be a first if they want Bojan that badly. I would send them a 2nd if need be.

I would then send Schroder to some place like Dallas that is desperate to use their exception on a playmaker. Once again, try to give 2nds with a player and get back a lottery protected 1st.

If we had two lottery protected 1sts and either Clarkson and/or Conley to target John Collins, Harrison Barnes, or Jerami Grant, maybe we have a shot.

I'm a no on the smart trade if it's for Bojan. We're too damn small as is. When the starting lineup grinds to a halt at least Bojan can back a guy down in the post on occasion. I don't see Smart or Schroeder doing that. Bogey doesn't have a ton of athleticism but he plays hard and is tough as nails.

IND could be a JC destination as well. They're in a weird spot, but it's kind of their MO to hover around mediocre and stay somewhat relevant that way. Lamb and Warren are expiring this summer, but they're also not going to be a big cap space team if they let them walk. They're in that weird range where it's probably better to operate as an over the cap team. They also have guys like Justin Holiday and Torrey Craig that could be useful for us as Royce alternatives.

I've been a staunch Royce defender, and still am to some degree, but I think it's fair to question if Royce is actually good or just mediocre at the things we desperately need.
