Trade Rumors Involving the Jazz

A part of me wants the Jazz to trade Don, and to build around Gobert with Vogel coming in as the head coach. We get some strong defensive minded players on the team we may just become a force to be reckoned with on D. Bring back Whiteside to be the backup. If we can get back Herro and Gabe Vincent, I'm cool with that. If we can miraculously get Durant, hell I'm cool with that too.

Maybe move Conley for Pat Bev and Jarred Vanderbilt? That's just off the top of my head.

On the Hoops Collective podcast Tim MacMahon says that Donovan would do the Jazz a big favor by forcing his way out of Utah this summer... says in the short term it would be very painful for the Jazz but ultimately in their best interest.

I couldn't agree more. We all know where this is ultimately headed... so just rip the band aid off now, get as many draft picks and as much young talent for him as possible and get rid of the headache of having to constantly cater to him at every turn. I think the longer we wait the less we will get back for him...if we trade him now with 3 years left on his contract teams are going to be willing to pay the premium for him. If we drag this out until he just has one year left on his deal, the return is going to be significantly less for him than what it is right now.

If Don demands a trade today, I’m willingly dragging it out to get the best offer. Very rarely are you going to get the best deal out of a negotiation by taking the first deal and not negotiation. When stars have demanded trades, waiting has proven to be successful. The buyers will get more desperate and eventually cave.

The Pelicans got everything they wanted for Davis because they stayed patient. And that was a situation where AD had less time on his contract and would only play for one team. I’m not advising we wait until Don has one year left…but there’s no reason to cave right away and take first deal.

If Don demands a deal…first step is to sit his *** on the bench, then tell everyone to raise their offers. For once I hope the Jazz actually do a good negotiation and shoot for a deal in their favor instead of one that works for both sides. This is where Ainge can show his worth.

So if they iso him offensively he can't finish or take advantage
The only way to do that is to employ some sort of switching defense, where decent offensive players should be able to take advantage of mismatches. A dive to the rim by a premium dunker can make a defender pay for leaving you every bit as much as good 3-point shot.

I also mentioned he can't create offensive on his own, other than a dunk or put back or lob. He can't drive, pull up or slash. That's the point. I know he can dunk but defenders usually strip him when he brings the ball down to his waist wanting to take advantage of the mismatch

Who cares if Donovan demands out this year or in 2-3 years. Point is, it's clearly inevitable, and if our FO cannot see that then God help them.

That being the case, you absolutely move him now vs. down the road. More years of team control + better leverage without being under the gun of a trade demand.

Wish him well but tired of his shtick, especially when he really isn't that good.

Trade Gobert and Trade Mitchell rebuild hopefully draft players and acquire pieces that will be loyal and stay long term with the club

If rumors about Durant wanting out of Brooklyn is true, and we are going to ship Don out instead of Rudy, I say go for KD.

Durant and Gobert would be phenomenal. I can see him having astronomical numbers with Don out of the picture. Durant would change this entire team's dynamic with his ability to facilitate. Ainge is the mastermind behind building solid championship contender teams with trades, and I can see him ringing Brooklyn's phone to serve up a deal to send Don to his home state.

I was thinking Donovan/Royce instead.

You absolutely keep Rudy if you did this deal. We would be instant contenders. Like legit contenders.

Lol. I'm not sure I agree. I don't think he's offensively spectacular. But he's not bad offensively and probably underutilized.

He helps the offense with screening but as far as offensive talent goes he doesn’t have much. We could definitely hit him with the lob more but let’s not act like we can throw it down to him and get out of the way.

If we could ship Royce instead of Bogey I'd love it. We're giving Brooklyn a superstar in their prime that will likely retire there if they build around him and Simmons properly.

I don't see this being impossible to pull off either. Don is a phenomenal player when he's in a great mood and ecstatic (we haven't seen that from Don in a minute) , and going to Brooklyn you'll probably see Don putting up insane numbers. He'd be face of Brooklyn, New York.

You want to do it amicably like PG and OKC. Have a meeting and say look you want out… okay… let’s make the best deal we can… let us work and we won’t make you look like the bad guy here.

If he does the “I want out and here’s my list of teams… “and it’s only like NY and Miami… then it’s get tough time.

All the reporting is he kinda wants out eventually but doesn’t want to be a bad guy.

I will say the best thing he can do is not request a trade but just be honest and transparent with his future plans. Then we have to be honest with ourselves and take him at his word. If he says he wants to give it a year but like we all fear there isn’t a realistic scenario where he wants to commit and stay beyond that… then you actively kick tires on what’s out there. Say he’s motivated and playing better to start the season… but we aren’t winning a lot… you can trade him at the deadline to a team that thinks they are in to something great and will give up the treasure chest… might be more than you can get now. But this conversation opens the window to trading him and that is key to getting the best offer imo. You will also have done some pre work on what is really out there.

Exactly. Good post. This is what I've been thinking all along. Something like this, but you said it perfectly.

This conversation is step 1 to our offseason.

If there's a situation where this deal can only happen that exact week, sure we can leverage it like the PG situation. That's a dream scenario as a seller.

The best thing for Don and the Jazz is to just have him pretend to be Dame (who may be pretending himself). Give his best to the team, be the best player he can be, and the Jazz will listen to offers in the background. I'm sure he would rather be "traded" than forcing his way out, even if we all know he wanted out anyways.

It might sound cheesey as hell, but I just think Don wants to be happy. He probably doesn't even know how at this point. He's still young. He's got his pay day, but work has been frustrating as hell. He doesn't seem to see eye to eye with his best teammate, and they are just trying to make it work. They are playing for results but there's just no fun. Right now, playing ball seems like work to him.

I don't know what the solution is, but I don't think it "HAS" to be elsewhere. He could be happier than a pig in **** here if we were winning and he was playing with people he enjoys playing with. At least that's my opinion....

Right… just have to have the window open for that lightening to strike. Maybe RJ gets off to a slow start… NY feels the pressure and they offer RJ and every pick and pick swap they have in the cupboard.

Sacramentos another team to continually monitor. GMs on lane duck deals do wild things… imagine having control of their draft picks the next 5 years.

I just want it all out there.

I was referring to his individual offensive skills his ability to create and finish shots. He can't score other than off a rebound or tip in or lob. He has no go to shot or can't dribble to save his life. So if they iso him offensively he can't finish or take advantage
He doesn’t need to and unless your name is someone like Embiid or Jockic, you don’t need to be trying to create your own offense It’s not good offense. That’s 90’s basketball. All you need your center to do these days is how you explained what Gobert does unless they can also shoot threes, which a lot of 5’s still don’t do.

He should when he’s getting paid like a top-10 player.

Basketball is a team sport, not an individual sport. Not everyone on the team needs to have the same skills. Gobert helps the team offense.

That's the point. I know he can dunk but defenders usually strip him when he brings the ball down to his waist wanting to take advantage of the mismatch
So, don't orient the team offense toward Gobert post-ups. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

If we believe in a Machiavellian Ainge, I believe the first thing to do would be to tell NYK that they don't even possess a trade package that's good enough for Mitchell. Tell them they need to tank and get a top 3 pick, otherwise they can't have Mitchell. We want all the future unprotected picks and pick swaps, but there has to also be a premium asset coming back. Barrett is premium, neither is their pick this year.
