Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

I have heard that because the Knicks have some other teams’ 1sts, that they can trade picks from consecutive years (can someone confirm if this is true). If so, this draft compensation is exactly what I’d want:
-‘23 1st (probably protected in some way, don’t they have potentially three 1sts? Maybe take the 2nd best of the picks available or something)
-‘24 unprotected
-‘25 swap
-‘26 unprotected
-‘27 swap
-‘28 unprotected
-‘29 swap
-‘30 lightly protected

That is if this is legal.
It is not... those picks are protected... if they were unprotected then it would be true.

I want the 23/25/27/29 picks and swaps in 26/28. I want the 2023 pick because I think they could very well be in the lotto next year. Any chances we get are good. I want the option swaps to be open ended too... we can swap our pick the minny pick or any of the picks they send to us.

If the reporting is true I think the walk away point is Grimes right now. In one sense I'm like just take the deal Danny... on the other hand Danny can be like... you really letting Quentin Grimes stop you from getting your guy?????

I actually think the Knicks could use Rudy Gay. I'd prefer to see him shunted elsewhere.
If they can trade him without having to attach assets or bring back bad salary - sure. Go for it. If they can’t get that deal, try to unload him now if possible.

Basically all of this.

Still have deals to be made for Bogey, Clarkson, Beverley, Conley and Beasley too - plus maybe subsequent deals for any of the players that come over in the trade for Mitchell or any of these other guys that I’ve listed.
I think the final king move will be when he sends Bogey, Conley, and maybe Vando (sadly) to LA for Westbrook and the two firsts.

That is if this is legal. Gives the Jazz the Knicks’ draft, gives the Jazz a guarantee they get a ‘24 pick, throws another ‘23 to the pile (which you can either use to fill out the depleted roster or use to trade up somewhere).

Absolute best they can offer us from their standpoint of only their picks is 23/25/27/29 and pick swaps in 24/26/28. I doubt we push hard for the 24 pick swap. We then likely grab 2 out of the other 4 1sts they own.

And maybe that is the middle ground... fine... you need to keep Grimes... well give me a second and take Gay.

Lemme make a simple revision: ‘23 Dallas pick

I want the 2023 Dallas 1st. We walk into the draft with 1/6 of the total picks in the 1st round.

Also Danny need to do all his work this summer cuz no one taking his calls next offseason when all the dust settles and people realize what happened.

Early tomorrow morning. Likely before 12pm EST.

Are the Knicks supposed to be better in ‘24 than ‘23? And to restate/clarify, I’d just take the Dallas ‘23 pick.

To maximize the total assets we get you’d start in 2023. If you start in 2024 you only get 24/26/28 and pick swaps in 25/27/29 instead of getting 23/25/27/29 and pick swaps in 26/28.

One thing to note is we got a 2026 pick swap from Minnesota. Get a 2026 pick swap from New York the same year to maximize our chances of a swap.

I just listened to this interview and Tony also said that sources told him a deal was close Tuesday evening but the Knicks backed off a little bit. He said sources from both sides have told him that conversations are continuing but nothing is imminent.

Another interesting thing he said is that the Jazz scouting department gave a 20 minute presentation on why they should draft Jaden McDaniels, they went with Dok instead, and he said that move killed this era of the Jazz.
That is so depressing. Jaden or Bane made too much sense not to draft one of them. People act like these late 1sts don't matter but for teams with little salary cap flexibility they make all the difference in the world. How different is our future if we snag Anfernee Simons who made way more sense than Grayson Allen because whoever we drafted wasn't getting minutes and McDaniels or Bane.

listened to the Tony Jones interview. This really got me.

Tony Jones said picking Dok over Bane or McDaniels killed this 8 year era of jazz basketball. Said the scouting department were given an opportunity to state a case for McDaniels for 20 minutes and DL still picked Dok. This pisses me off. Tony then said it killed 8 years of quality gm’ing. How the **** do you not listen to your scouting department? What are you paying them for?? If DL drafts McDaniels or Bane then that just makes the acquisitions of Conley and Bogey that much better.
