Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

Because KD had to confirm he was staying in Brooklyn which made the Kyrie trade less plausible, so LA moved on.

That's why PB was being such a baby about Durant, because he was holding him up getting dealt to the Lakers.
We have 15 players on the roster now. If we’re getting multiple pieces back from the Knicks we will have to move some guys in a 3-for-1 type of deal. I wonder what kind of deal is out there for that…

The other obvious answer is that the second deal doesn't exist, meaning LAL is taking the IND or not dealing with UTA at all. If your answer to why it hasn't happened yet is because UTA did this to stall a IND trade, that is just wishful thinking.
I was referring to our business... like that whole Donovan Mitchell trade thing. Why wouldn't we wait to handle our other business?

They also have other bigger business I am sure it would have been preferable to take care of first...

The timing is curious and fair to question for both teams.

THT would be a possible salary filler or addition to any Russ trade.

The Jazz got the guy they seemed to want and made sure he didnt get dealt elsewhere.

Yes, this is much more plausible than a "down payment".
Wut.... in the Russ trade there is already too much salary going out in almost every scenario. Filler? Jebus. THT's inclusion means it is harder to do the deal as you need like $60M in matching salary.

I can't understand why you think in such mutually exclusive terms.

My guess? The Jazz wanted this deal so they did it. Also because Beverley might be irrelevant to their other plans. As a down payment to prevent a looming Pacers trade? Nah...no way lol. Bogey-Beasley/Clarkson-Reddish for WB is still very much alive, but it's not alive because the Jazz stalled a Pacers trade from happening.

Doesn't just have to be to delay a Pacers deal. Why no way this is plausible? Why can't it be like "hey we agree in principle on this deal but we'd like some action now to make sure you are serious". Like exactly how people show an offer is serious in real estate or business... take some real action now... we can execute the rest later. If you trade Bev now it doesn't jeopardize the other deal later... just like it doesn't jeopardize a potential Donovan deal... so go ahead and execute it now.

I think I'm half-way persuaded by HH -- not a down payment, but more just a "don't forget about us as you're negotiating your next deal -- we might just have what you want there as well." The kind of thing that makes it just a bit harder for the trade partner to ignore your next offer.

I'm also reasonably sold that the Jazz were happy to do the deal on its own. It's been no secret (for a long time) that the Jazz had liked THT from the draft process.

I think I'd put the Pacers trade with the Lakers at 60%. Bigger names, younger players who have been long term starters.

But HH is right that if the Lakers prioritize clean books next year, we can make a very competitive offer: Bogey, Beasley, (likely Reddish), and (if needed) Vanderbilt. I think that's the kind of offer that would at least cause the Lakers to think twice.

Or the Jazz just wanted to secure the player and not risk it...
That's fine... I also buy some of the not wanting Bev to get too vocal stuff so do it now. I buy that maybe they like him more than I do and didn't think it mattered if they had Bev available.

I also see a world where they have a bigger deal essentially agreed to and executed this part early to give the guys some certainty or because the front offices wanted to commit each other to something now. It's less likely but I guess I am not as rigid as some who think its lol worthy.

If both teams like the deal and it doesn't affect the other deals they do it. That's exactly what I'm saying. What you're saying is that this deal somehow entices the Lakers to do business they wouldn't have done otherwise. If they like the Pacers deal more, they're going to take it. If they like the Jazz deal more, they're going to take it. It's not like Danny gave the Lakers a sample of crack cocaine to hook them in.

I think the Jazz are doing a horrible job on the phones if they have to make a "bad" deal to make sure the Lakers know they are interested in WB. Like....in what world do the Lakers forget that the Jazz are an option for WB? Patrick Beverley isn't a basket you send your clients during the holidays.

NOPE!!! I said this could be part 1 of a bigger deal. Not some favor... but like we basically agree on a trade here but can't execute it per the CBA. And folks were like "why split the deal in two deals... why not just wait... lolz and lmao". Well you do it to show that you will follow through with part 2 so they don't do the other deal. This isn't helping your buddy move and then saying "you owe me one" and hoping he comes through later.

If this deal doesn't affect the bigger deals they want to do... then it won't affect a deal we do later with each other. Does it mean we agree to every detail of the deal? nah there might be some fine tuning that could happen depending on other things... but we both showed we are serious by doing part of the deal that we could now. Also makes Bev happy, Lebron happy etc.

Both teams are in high stakes negotiations and showed a little bit of their cards... teams knew that we are likely to move Don and Lakers are likely to move Westbrook but it isn't certain. Its completely fair to say "why show your cards on this now?". I think its likely LA already has their Westbrook deal done basically when they did this deal. Is it Indiana? maybe. Another team? sure.

I know we hung up the phone with them yesterday and agreed to a trade... so I know we talked with them in detail too.
