The Republicans are trying to cobble together something to match the Democrat's ground game. In fact DeSantis said that would be key to his campaign, but the reality of proactive gathering of votes is that population density is everything. A single building in a city center can have as many votes as many square miles of rural area. The transit time between residences can be a dozen seconds versus a dozen minutes. The GOP would have to build a ground game 10 times the size of the Democrat one to be on even ground, or the GOP would simply have to pass voter ID laws which makes the proactive harvesting of votes a nonissue. Lazy apathetic people can go back to being non-voters by their own choice, and engaged voters can get themselves to where the voter ID is being checked. Voter ID laws are about having elections decided by the in-person vote, not about different ethnicities being too unfortunate to be capable of getting an ID. Anyone who believes the latter is themselves a racist even if they attempt to mask it in being opposed to racism.
