Official "How Could We Trade Up" Thread

Let's kick around ideas on how - and with whom - we could move up in the draft.

4. Charlotte Hornets
Don't see it. Charlotte is in "BPA" mode, and the only way I see this make sense is if they are ambivalent between two guys at 4/5, and we really want the other one. But I doubt our perceived benefit of Ace/Tre at #4 is "better enough" than VJ/Fears/whomever at #5 that we would part with any significant value. This would be a very "meh" move.

3. Philadelphia 76ers
Probably the team that would be most interested in a "win-now" player. They are in cap hell with Embiid, George, and Maxey. Lauri fits in perfectly with Embiid and Maxey. The issue here is matching contracts. We would probably have to take Paul George back. He'd be a phenomenal tank commander, but would rot here for three years. Has anyone ever bought out a contract with $150m+ remaining? Would that even be feasible?

2. San Antonio Spurs
This is the one. We need a Dylan Harper, and I'm not sure he really fits there. We may not even have to give up #5 - some package of Lauri + Kessler and/or future draft consideration could be very enticing for them. Contracts could also be the issue here - package back would have to include Harrison Barnes - but I believe they do have some cap room for next season. Are they "better" with Lauri than Giannis? Hell no. But he does provide better shooting, doesn't really need the ball, and they wouldn't have to give up any of their other good young pieces like they would in a Giannis trade.

1. Dallas Mavericks
They would be insane to trade this pick. Punting on Flagg and building around AD + a 33-y/o Kyrie with a blown knee would be absurd, so I think we can put this one to bed. If Nico really did want to double-down on this core he could throw his hat in the Giannis ring and just really go for it. Is he dumb enough? He did trade Luka, so anything is possible, but I sincerely doubt it. If I traded Luka and Flagg within a six-months time span I would legitimately fear for my life.

We're not in agreement, at least I'm not.

I don't think there is a significant difference between 3-5 currently. We "might" be able to trade up to 2, but I think it will be costly. There is no way we are trading to 1.

We're not trading up to 1 or 2. I think 3 has a decent potential for trade. That would presumably be because PHI doesn't like Ace which is a decent assumption. Ace is anti Morey.

It took a protected first for DAL to move up from 5 to 3 to draft Luka. That pick ended up 10th, which is what you would have expected. I don't think the Lakers pick has the value of a 10th pick, but I'm sure we could get the right value if DA is desperate enough for Ace.

Assuming Ace and VJ are left on the board at 4 I could see the Hornets and Jazz swapping spots for a small price.

Hornets already drafted Brandon Miller so I could see them preferring VJ over Ace. If Ace gets past the 3rd pick I believe there's a fairly decent chance the Jazz can get him. If Jazz need to trade up to 3 I think Morey would target Lauri.

If Ainge/Zanik can find some way to acquire #3 while keeping #5 that would be such a huge lift after last night's disappointment. Drafting both Ace and Maluach would be such a reset on this rebuild. No offense to our current youngsters but none of them have that type of potential to be legit building blocks.

SAS is our best shot. They already have Fox so they literally have to have Harper standing in the corner if they don't make a trade. Not sure Harper and his dad would be OK with that. Now it all depends on if Houston can outbid them for Giannis and they aren't motivated enough to blow their load on KD/Booker, then we have a shot to trade up. Spur’s roster is better off with someone like Tre or Kon.

Don't think it's insane to think Charlotte might want Lauri for #4. They've been bad for a while.

Ball/Miller/Bridges/Lauri/Williams is a great starting 5.

Nurkic/Grant Williams/Okojie works straight up for Lauri.

Jazz trade with Milwaukee to keep Giannis off the market. Collins/Sexton for Dame and a future pick and/or swap.

And acquring the #2 pick would be the only scenario where we trade up, as there isn't much of a talent gap between prospects projected within the 3-5 range.

Yes it is lmao. They aren't going to want to trade Giannis. If they can keep the dream alive they will try.
yeah that dream is already dead. They are stuck with no option forward but to tear it all down. I do wish Giannis stays so we can maybe convince the Spurs to trade with us instesd.

They don't own their own picks. No reason to tank. If Giannis is willing to stay then they will keep Giannis and make the PO.
