The Climate Change Thread

I feel like climate change has affected me and my lifestyle just over the course of my life. Enough for me to do anything more than turning off the lights more diligently and throwing the cardboard in the recycling? No.

I've lived in the Salt Lake Valley most of my life. Our seasons are different now vs in the 80s. It is pretty undeniable IMHO.
The changes in the salt lake valley are 100% because of cloud seeding.

I don’t disagree
Strange to post this then: The issue with climate is that it’s a long term issue that will never affect anyone alive today meaningfully.

I was disagreeing with that statement. Nothing more.

I am a lights Nazi in my house. I also always turn off lights at work that people leave on all the time.
I told this story before but I made a flyer and put it up at work asking people to not sit out in there cars with them running and to instead utilize our awesome break room.
I never run my vehicle unless I need to. I ride my bike and walk to the store. I use public transportation. The last car I bought was hybrid that gets about 50 miles to the gallon. I recycle religiously. I utilize the heat from the sun in the winter as much as possible and close the blinds in the summer to use less energy for cooling (also keep my thermostat at 75 in the summer which is hotter than most).
I only have one TV in my house. I pick up trash that others leave all over the place. When I need hot water instead of running water down the drain as I wait for it to get hot, I instead collect it in a big pitcher to use to water the plants and pets etc.
I do as much as I reasonably can (most of that stuff is really easy) to make the world a better place.

Reasonable.

I’m viewing it from the perspective of, when will the negative externalities of climate change outstrip GDP growth? So far, humanity has found the sweet economic honey of fossil fuels irresistible. As much as we hate them, we continue to use them, like an addiction. I believe this is because human desire knows no bounds.

But if we lose delicate ecosystems like coral reefs or mangroves because they don’t provide economic value I do think that is still meaningful and an enormous loss.

This is why we will effectively never get a handle on climate change and it's the thing that those in power don't want to ever discuss as they are most likely among the offenders. They are perfectly fine with harming the bottom 90% as long as they can keep doing whatever they want, which will get us exactly nowhere.

“While it's tricky to tie individual extreme weather events to climate change, studies have shown that global warming is increasing the frequency, duration and intensity of heat waves around the world. The planet’s 10 hottest years since 1850 have all occurred in the past decade, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the past two years have shattered global temperature records“.

The awkward thing is the top 10% isn’t just Bezos and Zuck - it includes all of us. The average American uses 22 bbl of oil per year. The global average is 5 bbl per person annually, and the bottom 7B people use between 1 - 3 bbl per person annually.

Yep, just another thing that sucks about the US that many people refuse to try to improve upon. Like guns and healthcare.
