What Do You Think The Kessler Extension Would Look Like?

It would seem to reason that if everyone is stocking up on stud wings, it might be useful to have someone to keep them off the rim. Kessler makes the game easier for all the other players on the team, which is why we sat him when we got serious about losing. No other player on the Jazz currently affects winning or losing like Walker Kessler. I'd like Bailey and Hedricks to become studs on perimeter switches on defense. That unlocks much more easily with Kessler.

I'm a defense-first guy, so this is my favorite jazz-related subject to think about.

I just hope retaining Kessler can be done at a reasonable price, because I think all rich contracts need to go to dudes who can shoot better than him.

Financial flexibility is the most important thing prior to identifying your franchise player. Sure, we could dump Lauri I guess but I just don’t see the earth shattering implications of trading Kessler for a good haul. I see more negatives overpaying him than I do negatives from losing him.

We had the worst defense in the league with him not that it’s his fault. But still, we have a whole lot of areas to address before overpaying a guy who has clear limitations.

Financial flexibility might be the least important team building factor for a team like Utah.

OKC built their title on continually having space, making trades with that space and then drafting well. Sure they had some pieces like PG to trade, but still, they acquired picks using cap space and trading players who were good but not essential players.

But you just want to fight me on this which is what you like to do.

The modern game is built with spacing. Kessler doesn’t provide any. Paying $30 million for Adams, Allen, Kessler, etc is bad business.

Thunder built their team through trades and the draft. They got extremely lucky Chet/Jalen were as ready as they were on their rookie contract. They also spend 30 million a year on an offensively limited center and they shot one of the lowest 3pt% in the playoffs of any team this year.

Exactly - OKC built through the draft with picks gained from their financial flexibility, and their draft picks turned into great options around SGA. Since they drafted well and saved money, they went out and added Hartlestein at $28,500 with their financial flexibility to address the center position.

We need to draft and find our key people before spending more than Hartlestein money on a guy who doesn’t score

Except now the new CBA mandates that you have a pretty high salary floor which makes it almost impossible to rent space like OKC did in years past. Many of the ways teams have built in the past are off the table going forward. I suspect it will look more like what the Knicks and the Pacers did where you just keep improving and consolidating while keeping good assets available for when the time comes, capitalizing on other team's mistakes.
 
I just know going forward, the more descending or constant value contracts you have, the better. Jazz should front load every one they can while they're not competing or up against the tax. Giving a fifth year to Kessler now is a great way to get him to sign an extension early, too.
The closer the annual average gets to $30m, the more likely the Jazz should wait to sign him, too.

I see you still say dumb **** about the Jazz in order to make some theory you have work.
 
Kessler is completely unproven because his results are so bad but his supporting cast was the worst in the league and because his playstyle seems unlikely to translate well to the postseason (where he's never been).

But he's still going to get a huge deal because he's a promising third year player.
