Trump Dictatorship and All Things Politics

I love how I post a few questions to a poster and then they have diarrhea of the mouth, proving exactly what I’ve accused them of in the past of being. lol it’s incredibly validating.

Being willfully blind and choosing to ignore what is going on before your very eyes is exactly how this played out in Germany too. Even at the height of his power people in his own country refused to acknowledge that Hitler was doing anything except the will of the people, because there will always be some people who approve of wanton cruelty and oppression because they benefit from it. Sounds like you are one of those. Glad your lack of conscience and mad business skills bro allow you to simply look the other way and ignore it all, as long as you are getting rich. Tone deaf doesn't begin to describe it.

This and your following post are some of the best writing I’ve seen on this website in a long time. I wanted to say two things:

1. One of the primary arguments many make is this “faux apathy.” They pretend to be neutral towards a myriad of issues, usually Trump’s obvious corruption and cruelty towards immigrants, and then make zero effort to show curiosity or concern over the issue. They clearly aren’t apathetic or neutral. They are either too tribal to admit the other side was right or too vested into Trump to call his *** out.

As you said, Germans played this game too. Many books have detailed this. Most Germans weren’t ignorant. They’d heard Hitler speak. They’d read his books and speeches. They’d seen the cruelty in their streets. Theyd lived through the Enabling Acts, Nuremberg laws, etc. They’d seen political parties banned and Hitler’s political opponents disappeared. They’d seen the synagogues burned and their neighbors taken away. They had an idea of what was happening. But they pretended to be ignorant because it’s easier to just put one’s head down and ignore the outside world. It’s easier to just focus on making money. They didn’t take the next step to learn what was happening. Why? Because pursing the truth into knowing with certainty would require action and that action would require conscience and courage, which were clearly in short supply. Just like today.

Just like today, people like @Bucknutz, lack the character and courage to learn of these issues (deep down, he knows) but he just doesn’t want to admit that liberals and Democrats were right. So he feigns ignorance and rationalizes his conscience away by accusing Kamala of being worse. He also seems to engage in the same tactic that husbands who beat up their wives and children do. “You made me do this.”

2. A few weeks ago you said this somewhere, but most people will be fine in an authoritarian dictatorship. You’re right, most people are okay. Most right wing dictatorships don’t completely melt down, like Nazi Germany. Most endure decades of economic stagnation and corruption. Most people are okay in modern-day Russia. Most Russians aren’t falling out of windows or drinking radioactive tea. Most are fine! Sure they lack freedoms and their economy sucks, but most know that if they don’t get involved in politics, they will likely be fine. The same applies to Turkey, Hungary (which Republicans and Trump have shown a great affinity for), and Iran (most people are fine) as long as they keep their heads down and don’t step out of line.

But the key to being a responsible citizen in a multi-cultural democracy shouldn’t be limited to just yourself or your tribe, but to everyone. Equality in a multicultural democracy requires at times, stepping out of line and calling people out (especially if it’s your own religion, political party, and/or tribe). The entire idea of America is that everyone, not just white conservatives, can have freedom and prosper. What’s incredibly disheartening is seeing so many Americans retreat into themselves and their own tribes rather than caring about others. “As long as me and my family are making good money in the United Kingdom, I’m good and **** that Mexican grandma for coming over here illegally! Enjoy Cecot!” You see this time after time in the Trump era where people don’t care about an issue until it impacts them personally.

My challenge to people like @Bucknutz is to be better. Learn about these other groups of people in your country. You may find that they were robbed of government programs that your family exploited. You may find that they were systemically discriminated against so they couldn’t participate in our democracy. You may find that they left a Central American country because of things that America did and came to America to contribute economically and culturally. You may find that being brought over the border as a child (as a DACA recipient) makes it incredibly hard to become a citizen. You may learn to see political opponents not as enemies that must be vanquished but as fellow citizens who share great values.

if all we’re focused on is how much money we can make for yourselves and family, what a shallow narrow sad legacy you’ll leave behind.

I’m old enough to remember to be criticized when I suggested Democrats blow the filibuster to reform the partisan Supreme Court. Now, they’re nakedly acting as the legislative branch for the GOP and we’re all growing numb to it. They’re empowering Trump as a sovereign. Republican presidents can kill entire departments to promote project 2025’s agenda that the legislative branch funds with a pen (autopen probably).
