I love Memo too, and I'd like nothing more that seeing him back in a Jazz uni, but his back just won't let him continue. It's really too bad. I would totally be OK with the Jazz retiring #13. So many great clutch shots, and such a great guy. I miss Memo. I wonder if he still has his house here.

The smartest move he ever made was trying to fix one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. That extension was idiotic (though I still think that had more to do with Gail than KOC). That extension cost the Jazz Wes Matthews, any real opportunity to improve, got us Raja Bell as a consolation, and cost about $20 million in the one year it was on the Jazz's books but never had to be.

It costs us Wes Matthews, but withh that said, Wes is overpaid and hasn't panned out to be who we thought he'd be. Another important part of that chain reaction is acquiring Alec Burks. I'd much rather have Burks who has a huge ceiling than a peaked out and overpaid Matthews.

So with Memo hitting the FA market (and likely getting a mult-year deal) and Boozer gone, the 4/5 depth chart was Fesenko, Millsap and whatever scrubs they could find (such as an Elson, Collins, etc.). Yea, good luck improving the team with that front court. In hindsight, yes, $10M is too much to pay for an injured player. Sorry, I know of nothing outside of tea leaves, a crystal ball or an Ouija board that would have let the Jazz know Memo would have that horrific injury.

Just the year before, when Boozer went down (yet again), Okur shot 60% from 3-PT range for a solid month, running the pick and pop flawlessly with Deron. Millsap also ran off a string of double-doubles. And the Jazz were WINNING, despite the defensive deficiencis of the Memo and Millsap.

As for Wesley, I doubt the Memo contract played any part in that decision. The contract Portland gave Wes was outrageous and unprecedented. Even Wes seemed stunned in his press conference. To get paid a lot more than the #1 pick in the draft, after starting for just 1/2 the season? Wes was (and is) a solid guard. But he's not an all-star. He had a very good year last season. But look at his numbers this year. I guarantee you if he was giving us that same production, there would be several posters saying we should have never matched the offer. And I'll bet Portland regrets it right now.

I didn't see this posted yet. I'd love to see the jazz sign him. I don't want him to get any real time unless the Jazz need a 3, but I love the guy and would love to see him retire here.

So a mercy hiring? What the hell, why not just have Greg Miller write him a personal check for $5 million and give him a seat behind the Jazz bench? Then Corbin won't be tempted to play him.

Agree. With all the hype on this board over Wes, he has come back down to earth, and it's looking once again like KOC made the right decision. Without a doubt, one of the best GMs in the league.

What I meant by my original posting was this: We have an empty roster spot; we have a player that knows the system; he can shoot from outside if we ever needed a last second 3; the fans love him; and it's likely his last season. If he is done for the year then never mind. I'm not saying I want to see him get playing time or that he deserves anything more than the vet minimum. I don't want him taking any of the other bigs' minutes. I was merely implying that signing him for the empty roster spot in case one of our bigs goes down and we needed a spot 4 minutes or if we are down 3 with 4 seconds left then maybe he'd be a viable option.

I realize that I am a complete Memo homer and not at all objective in this situation. I love the guy for playing through injury when reasonable, hitting big shots, mocking Kobe, and for always being so nice to the fans. I would love to see a "mercy hiring" or whatever you wanted to call it that brought him here to finish out the season on the bench for the vet minimum. But I realize there's a 1% chance that it happens and I'm okay with that.

I'm curious to know where you think Memo would've made more than what he ended up getting from the Jazz if the Jazz had just had him play out the season. If Memo is this saint like is advertised, the Jazz would have had a real chance at matching whatever offer came down.

And as far as this crystal ball nonsense goes, Memo was not an iron man and he wasn't young either. He could've just as easily had a career-ending back-injury, ACL tear, or something requiring micro-fracture surgery. You don't extend non perennial All-Stars past 30. You just don't. Rip Hamilton and Stephen Jackson have had some of the most miserable contracts in the league because of their extensions, and they were also better players than Memo was.

It was a mistake then, and it's an even bigger mistake in retrospect. Again, I get/got the impression this was as much or more a move driven by ownership than KOC.
