Wurd to the STG Rep Train,
You're my only contact on the inside, so I thought I'd share my final thoughts on the draft. Post them if you feel like they're worthy of the discussions happening in there.
Opening Propositions:
1. I think the Jazz will go young this year. A good pick in 2014, and maximum salary flexibility appear to be the key targets of the FO.
2. Given #1, the incredible amount of research the FO, and our current flexibility, I think it's possible the Jazz bring four rookies to camp. I think they could move up to 8 or 9 and still get four guys.
3. Our PG needs are well documented, but it isn't worth moving up to get Burke (likely too costly) or McCollum (too many questions, imo).
4. Maybe I've been duped by smoke screens, but I don't believe the FO is wild about Schroeder at 14.
some preliminary conclusions:
1. I believe the FO would move up for Burke if he fell to 8 or lower, but we are looking at a draft where can make a bigger impact by addressing needs OTHER THAN PG. These include:
a. Perimeter defense
b. Shooting
c. Getting a short-clock scorer
d. Looking for a value pick in a guy who can breakdown the defense with his own dribble
Let's roll with this... Here are my hopes:
1. If Bazz is really gonna slide, then we need to get him. He helps a - c. If you get this kind of talent at 8 or 9, then you accomplish d, too.
2. I've really warmed on Kasarev. I think we could acquire the pick to get him if we don't already have it. He's smart and plays well with others. He's dogged by the same questions on defense as Hay and Thompson were (both of whom are now average to above-average defenders), and while I do question his fire a little, I don't think there are many reasons to suspect he can't get there. He'll be a 40% 3pt shooter.
3. If Archie is gonna fall half as far as some say, then he's the obvious value pick. I honestly wouldn't be disappointed if we were running Burks and Archie as attacking 1s next year.
4. Get a backup 4. I'm thinking of Erik Murphy in particular.
Final tally:
This would leave us with an odd combination of players. I admit that. Let's have a look at how I'd play them NEXT YEAR. (Now, keep in mind that I was a very vocal proponent of grabbing and playing '13 guys as a way of helping our '14 strategy; maybe a guy increases his value and/or can be used next year to acquire a pick, or move one up; that's my thinking with this depth chart).
Burks/Goodwin/Tinsley
Bazz/Karasev
Hayward/Carroll/Marvin
Favors/Marion/Evans
Kanter/Murphy
(obviously there's a lot of sliding from 2 to 3, and from 4 to 5. Hayward runs a lot of the half-court sets. We address pg in '14.)
