Reading the Tea Leaves

I can't see Ty getting fired during this season-- but man, I hated last night.

I have spent most of the past few years defending Ty, and giving him a chance to figure things out-- but last night was just embarrassing.

I know that one might argue that it's the players who are lacking effort-- which is true. Also, the calls of "WE NEED TO INSTL SLON OFFENCE" hold little merit.

But when I see an entire team not give a ****, and see players who lack confidence, I chalk it up to a fault in coaching.

Ty is by all accounts a players-coach, and I'm sure his trust, and friendships with his players go a long way. But it all comes down to our players lacking motivation; our players lacking initiative to execute initial offensive sets with precision (resulting in running late shot-clock pick and rolls)-- and it really points to a lack of discipline.

Good post.

However, "player's coach" carries wide-ranging definitions. I don't see Ty as a player's coach in the sense I call it. I see him as more of a blend into the team kind of guy.

By my definition (doesn't make it right, I know) a player's-first-coach is a guy that demands everything from his players, works as hard as he asks them to work, and if they give it their all.. he goes to bat for them against anyone.. even at his own demise. If the team sees all of this, it builds trust in the coach and, even more importantly, team chemistry.

My worry about Kanter is that his pick and roll defense is al Jefferson like. He compromises our whole defense. If Hayward and a new wing scorer provide the scoring maybe Kanter is the one who gets moved.

That's selling Enes waaaay too short. He's already better than Al on PnR D.

I think he'll be a better defender than Griffin and Love, while being a very reliable 18+ pts/game scorer.

I don't know who will still be here between Favors and Kanter. BUT, I'm not choosing right now either. I LOVE some aspects of Favors game and HATE others. Same with Kanter.

In fact, if I had to choose right this second, I think I take Favors because I think with the right coach, he could be a beast. I'm still a little worried about Kanter's defense and rebounding. That being said, I'm not picking now because I don't have to. I want to see how both play out.

Especially if we can get a coach like Sloan. I think Favors would be an all star with Sloan as his coach. I think Favors needs that type of personality to get him motivated.

Here is what I think happens:

I do think Burke, Burks, Kanter, Rush, Gobert and Favors stays. I'm 50/50 on Hayward. I really, really like him at a certain price point. I DON'T like him at all at George money. I let him walk if someone tosses that at him.

Hayward's points by quarter last night:

1st - 4 pts (30-16 Toronto)
2nd - 2 pts (62-36 Toronto)
3rd - 13 pts (60-91 Toronto)
4th - 6 pts (115-91 Toronto)

Hayward is a good complementary player, but at the beginning of games, he doesn't exist. Everyone complains that the Jazz are playing 4 on 5 because of the PG, but Hayward has not shown up ONCE when we needed him to. Anyone can put up 19 points when you are down 30. Put up 19 when it is the first quarter and Toronto goes on a 6-0 run. That is a max guy.

Someone who puts up 19 when you are down 30 is a 8 mill per guy.

Also, everyone talks about how much Corbin sucks as a coach, but when will one of Kanter, Favors, Hayward step up and OWN this team? When will they take control of the game early? That is what a max guy does. And right now, we don't have that guy.

I would have agreed last season. I have no clue what he's doing defensively this season.

Back to that point up there.

We have a new coach next year. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jazz move Burks and their second pick for a vet pg, or go after Collison. Also, I think they bring in another backup big man and a new coach. I think we look like this:

Burke/Collison or Hinrich
Hayward/Burks
Parker or Wiggins/Rush or Williams
Favors/Humphries
Kaner/Gobert

And a new coach, hopefully Thibodeau. Thibodeau on this team would turn Favors into an All-Star. Could you imagine the way this team could run with a lineup of:

Burke
Hayward
Wiggins/Parker
Humphries
Favors

Or

Burke
Burks
Hayward
Parker
Favors

That lineup would be good defensively, have an amazing offensive scorer, players who could run and shoot. That lineup is a matchup nightmare. Again, it's early and I've only see Parker play one game, but his offense makes people wonder if I'm happy to see them or if I have a geoduck in my pocket.
