What's new

Countdown to a Letdown--aka Jazz trade deadline 2014

I hope we're trading Enes. Either on the trade deadline or the draft day. It might surpise some folks(don't get me wrong Enes is still my guy and I think he'll have a good career) but that Corbin doesn't play Enes and Derrick together at all is a problem. A couple of weeks back we saw Enes and Derrick for a couple of minute play together but it's a no go these days. It effects really 3 players.

1. If Enes is getting 20 - 24 minutes than there are just limited minutes for Derrick. And Derrick should play 30+ every single game.

2. Obviously it effects Enes's minutes.

3. Rudy does not get any playing time at all.

If the stretch 4 is really the new way to go in Utah than you have to let somebody go. And Enes is the obvious choice here.

On a side note I can't figure this season out. At first everybody kind of knew what to expect but honestly I can't see a clear path and really don't know in which direction this franchise is headed. Keeping Corbin, letting RJ play more than Alec quite often and winning as many games as possible so god forbide we'll have a shot at a top pick. It shouldn't depresse me but it kindda does. I'm one of the guys that believe in our current core but we really need a stud! And we ain't gettin it in FA. This season was supposed to pe be fun watching the young guns grow but I don't feel it. Gotta do something really fast.

rade talk at All-Star weekend has been "as slow as it's been in a long time," said one executive who has not received a single phone call. A lot of teams have made it known which players they are open to moving, but the problem is finding trade partners. Very few teams are willing to part with premium draft picks or take on future salary, which are the two key drivers for trades. CBSSports.com

This is what I've been saying for the past month! There are a lot of sellers, not many buyers. Which means that overpaid players like RJ and MW are even harder - virtually impossible - to move. The only deals available MIGHT be trading expirings for a player that a team absolutely wants to get rid of. Can't think of too many around the league. And certainly not any team that would give up a lottery pick.

Why would a team give up a lottery pick? I don't care what we trade Jefferson or Williams for.

What else would be the motivation for taking on a team's garbage?
For example, what is preferable: Taking on a player like Prince for a late 1st or spending $5M next summer on a FA who can actually contribute? Most late firsts never amount to anything. I'd rather see the Jazz fill a hole in the roster with a decent FA.
As for RJ, he has virtually no trade value due to his huge contract. MW has more, but again, not anywhere near the value of his contract. The problem is the only teams that would want him are playoff contenders. Most are over the cap so they would have to send somewhat equivalent contracts in return. And Utah is just ONE of many sellers. There's no reason for these teams to even offer a late 2nd for MW or RJ. Other teams have equal or better players to offer.

In the last several weeks, I've only heard Memphis, Detroit, Charlotte and Phoenix as even remote possibilities. In the case of Detroit and Memphis, Jazz tie up roughly half their expected cap space for an extra season by getting a player with another year left. Charlotte could get Marvin (or Jefferson) for Gordon. Phoenix could do the same with their Okafor spot. Question is, do they WANT RJ or MW enough to give up an asset?

I don't see how Marvin is anywhere close to untradeable. His contract isn't that overpaid, and it only has a half-year left. If a team is interested in signing him next year, then trading for him now will give you the inside tract of retaining him for cheap.

Is it just me, or are trade rumors eerily quiet this year? We only have 3 days left and I haven't read anything regarding rumors. Actually feels like a good omen for the Jazz.
