Countdown to a Letdown--aka Jazz trade deadline 2014

^^I agree Jazz4ever. This is one of the few deals that would make sense. But a) Memphis might be able to do better elsewhere; b) a rookie in this draft may be FAR better than a vet (whether it be Marvin or someone else) that they can get with their exception. And in the end does it really matter for Memphis to make the playoffs? Get in, get pounded by OKC and end up with a pick in the 20's (there would be 5-6 EC playoff teams with worse records than Memphis if they were to pass GS). Miss and have a chance at picking up a very good player.

At the very least, if I'm the Memphis GM, I lottery protect the pick. Getting a 1-yr rental - who may or may not re-sign - isn't worth it otherwise. And in that case, then the deal isn't all that great for the Jazz. A pick in the low 20's is a role-player. Jazz are better off having cap space in the summer to either sign a better FA than what they would have in Prince on the bench, or use their cap room to facilitate trades.

The MLE is only 5.2 and 500k of that is already going to Jamaal Franklin. So about 4.7 million to land a player of Marvin's caliber is unlikely for them. A rookie doesn't coincide with their core windows of Gasol, Randolph, and Conley, something they have to consider. Mcdermott might be one exception, he is one player NBA ready and will be ready to help them a lot even in year one. I'm sure they have their eye on him.

Agree. It would have been nice to "double-dip" and get yet another asset for RW, Rush or Biedrins. Already got a return on those 3.
Trade Marvin and the minutes go up for Kanter, Evans and perhaps Gobert. How many extra games do we lose because of that?
Even IF a trade partner could be found for RJ, like you said, he's really not hurting the tank. Deduct Jefferson and Burks plays more, offset by whoever comes over in a deal and/or Clark, Evans or Thornton getting some burn at SG/SF.

Trading RJ would hurt the development of our young core.

Trade chatter:

GS is desperate to win now. They have traded away many future picks and their new stadium plans were set back at least a year.

rival executives told USA TODAY Sports last week that anyone outside of point guard Stephen Curry and center Andrew Bogut is, to varying degrees, up for discussion. That includes second-year small forward Harrison Barnes, the Warriors reserve who is known to have sparked serious interest from a long list of suitors but who is unlikely to be traded unless it was part of a package for a big-name player.

David Lee + Harrison Barnes + 1st Round pick(s) for Kevin Love
Warriors get a win now starting unit of Bogut, Curry, Thompson, Iggy, and Love. Love gets to come to California, where he could ink a longterm deal with the Warriors, and Minnesota gets good value for Love. It is similar value to what the Jazz got for Deron Williams. It seems like a win-win.

The Celtics want two unprotected 1st-rounders for Rondo.

I'd trade Jefferson/Biedrens/Marv (+ JLIII) and two first rounders for Rondo, then have Burke back-up and learn from Rondo for the rest of this season and next. At the end of next you can decide to re-sign Rondo or give Burke an extension. They could also play in the backcourt together sometimes as Rondo can guard 2-guards and Burke plays well off the ball.

Would be good for GS but then their pathetic bench now turns non-existent!!!

What 1st round picks do they have to offer? That's the problem. Can't trade one in 2015 (successive year rule) and we already have their pick for 2017.

They're stuck. They want to make some moves but are very limited. Have to trade players and not picks. Hopefully they do a panic deal and give up too much. Then someone turns an ankle and they're really sunk.

That's probably why Lindsay wanted the 2017 pick. If the Jazz had gotten the '14 and '16 pick, a standard trade, GSW could dangle the '18 pick. As it is right now. GSW can't trade ANY first round pick since I think you can only trade picks to a certain point into the future, so GSW can't do the '19 pick until next year.

Whether it was knowing he locked them out of trading picks or believing, as PKM, that the 2017 draft will be EPIC, it was a good strategy to get the extra 2017 first. Personally, I think DL just wanted to get the pick as far out as he could, knowing that we'd likely have to turn over one or two players due to future contract demands.

Sweet! Give them Biedrins, Jefferson, and Golden State's 2 first rounders. Then we just bought Rondo for a second rounder when all is said and done. Just have to make sure that Rondo has to walk to Salt Lake from Boston to check in for tanking purposes. . .
