Also, while it was suicide, I heard he'd been in rehab again recently so I have to wonder if drug use played a role in this at all.

From all accounts RW was a stand up guy - did a lot with the USO, Comic Relief. Is there ever a more helpless feeling to see a loved on crushed by depression?
Having said that I am not looking forward to the avalanche of accolades on a guy who was a fair to middling talent at best. Easily one of the most over-rated comics of our time. If you strip away all the horrible comedic films he did over the years (really try to name 5 good ones) he probably would have had a more productive career as a dramatic character actor.
At the end was there anyone who found him funny other than other comedians? His last stand up special (Weapons of Self Destruction or something like that) was cringe worthy - he was truly resting on his laurels at that point.
