Multi-vote (8?) poll that doesn't have public results where the vote is "Who are the best (insert number [8?]) teams?". You pull the top-four for the byes then pull the bottom-two from the playoffs (or maybe just pull 6 from the bottom to get to an eight-team playoff).

I like this idea, makes it a more level playing field and if someone wants to sacrifice a player for a good coach then let that be it.

I have no idea what you're saying, so I'm guessing it's complicated. How about a vote between the 7 losing teams to determine the 8th and last team to advance in the second round?

I like this - kinda like a wild card round for the 7 losing teams.

There is no way to make this 100% fair, and since it's an utterly inconsequential contest, I don't see why it matters. I don't even remember how I did last time I played.
