Jazz To sign William Howard

No such thing as G League rights. I highly doubt this dude is willing to make 25k a year in the gleague
  • NBA teams can draft players and sign them to NBA G League contracts, thus retaining their rights through the “Draft Rights Player” rule.
  • NBA teams can designate up to four players that they cut during training camp as “affiliate players,” meaning those players will join that team’s NBA G League affiliate (should the players choose to sign into the NBA G League). These players are signed under contract with the league rather than the team, however, meaning they are technically free agents who can be called up to any of the 30 NBA teams.

This is what I was talking about. And you might be right. But if he’s looking to be an NBA player and can’t latch on with the Jazz or another team after training camp, there is a mechanism for the Jazz to keep him with the Stars if he ends up in the G-League.

Yeah, dude has to agree to be a g league player which he would never do.

I think he’s likely to make the team based on what I’ve seen of him and his situation. Curious to see how they deal with Brantley and Oni.

Ideally, the NBA clubs would be able to eventually have 5 guys on 2-way contracts and 5 affiliate players. Use the G-league more like a real minor league farm system for clubs to develop talent and depth.

He's on the real big boy roster... not a camp signing. He's taking care of a buyout... or we are... you don't do that for G League.

JWF and Oni or Brantley will be on a two-way or overseas. I'm cool with us paying the money to get a look at them even if one of them is cut. It's their money... it was going to disappear (well as a cap asset) and I will applaud them for risking it ant taking a chance rather than scoffing that they paid money and wasted it for a summer league guy.

I think Oni might have the best chance at making the real roster. I just see him as being closer to filling an NBA role... in part because his NBA role would be less ambitious than what Brantley does.

The Jazz waited a while to sort some of this out... it is possible that they have either agreed on 2-way deals with their guys or those guys know they will need to go overseas like NWG for a year or two. Wasn't like any of them blew up to a point they will be guaranteed an NBA roster spot.

They might also be willing to move on from JWF. Again... I'd applaud them pivoting if they saw something that soured them on one of the guys.

Jazz got Royce O'Neal out of the blue too, so I'll trust them with this guy. Range seems to be there, dude's long...
That leaves Oni/Brantley fighting for the 2-way spots...
If nothing else worth noting happens, they'll probably fill the last roster spot with a non-guaranteed or just leave it open just in case...

This dude pretty intriguing honestly... high steal rate... good outside shooting on a good amount of attempts... some decent assist numbers. No idea if he's a plus athlete or defender but those items look encouraging.

I'm really happy with this offseason man... hopefully the season shows the fruits of DL/Zanik's labor.

Isn't that what the Warriors did with that Smailagic "aka" the next Jokic?

Take with a pinch of salt since this is nowhere near 100% reliable but a French user on reddit is saying Howard's contract is 1 year and it's not guaranteed. If this is correct, Howard is very far from certain to stick. He probably will fight for a roster spot in pre-season training camp.

Nah. Alen Smailagic was most likely on a select contract. No NBA team call ups, and they don’t own his NBA rights until they draft him in the NBA draft (like they did). I liked him a lot. Would’ve tried to poach him.

“The NBA G League announced a Select Contract as part of a comprehensive professional path that will be available, beginning with the 2019-20 season, to elite prospects who are eligible to play in the NBA G League but not yet eligible for the NBA. The contracts, which will include robust programmatic opportunities for development, are for elite players who are at least 18 years old and will pay $125,000 for the five-month season.”

Why would they negotiate and pay a buyout to sign someone to a non-guaranteed contract? I'm guessing the pinch of salt advice is good here.

Because they like him as a camp competition guy and they think the competition is worth the buy out. It's not a huge buy out either. It's about the number we pay for camp invitees' bonuses.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

NBA scouts are everywhere. It is tough for legitimate NBA talent to fall through the cracks. I'm hoping for somewhere between Niang and ONeal. If I'm feeling crazy, somewhere between ONeal and Ingles the last year of his contract.

Wouldn’t being picked up by an nba team indicate he isn’t falling through the cracks? I’m interested to see what he is signed to and what his contract looks like. If he’s signed wouldn’t that indicate he didn’t slip through the cracks?

Thank you... that's good insight. Sounds like Larsens is saying it isn't a lock for him to make the roster either. They will bring in others to compete for that spot and I'm sure they will monitor the waiver wire as rosters are cut down coming in to the regular season.

He is still interesting to me.

The same reason they would buy second round draft picks and not sign them. I don’t know.
