Jazz sign Hassan Whiteside

Our interior D is going to be elite 48 minutes, every niight. Mind you, Whiteside just averaged identical numbers to Gobert a season ago. This season is going to be crazy. I think we officially have a superteam.

I think the Jazz need a SF that can defend and a SG/SF that can defend. We needed 3 perimeter defenders and have so far added 1.

I’m not wild about Whitesides. I want to see what we have in Doke. Is there really a need to three deep with traditional centers when we have other glaring needs?
You're not hyped about a guy who averaged the same numbers as Gobert only 2 seasons ago?

A while ago Colts offensive coordinator Thomas Moore had an amazing quote about why they didn't give backup QBs more practice reps and almost all went to Peyton Manning? He said "Because if 18 goes down, we are ****ed... and we don't practice ****ed". I feel very similarly about Gobert. If he goes down we are screwed. No matter who the backup is. The only hope if it happens is it doesn't happen in the playoffs and/or for long enough period that we miss the playoffs.

With that said, I don't mind the signing for the minimum. I just feel like we've misidentified our biggest problem and it's likely we won't fix it this year either.
In the playoffs that might be true. But in the regular season its huge to have a solid depth to help you when a good player goes down for awhile. Keeping a good position until that player gets back helps a ton. It also allows you to limit minutes so your guys are more fresh for the playoffs. The reality is we need to be healthy for the playoffs. We cant be without our stars and we cant have hobbled stars on one leg expecting to win.

It makes a huge roster difference to have Whiteside for a min compared to Favors for his contract. I think they are about the same level of player but Whiteside can be better in the style defense we play with Gobert. My only concern is that he fits in with his role and the team.

Basically we have another Gobert on the team. Lol. I'm sure he will fit in just fine.

I know this doesn’t make any sense but the Jazz suing DL feels right to me.

Doke is gonna end up having a Luther Wright impact on the court without the wild story.
Drafting projects
I really like this signing. In fact, I’ve liked this Jazz offseason more than most I can recall. We can now at least play a consistent defense for an entire game, and can use Rudy Gay for small-ball lineups at the 5 if need be. Getting Conley back, and getting an absolute draft steal (so they say) in Butler in the 2nd round (and getting two 2nd round draft picks in the process) tells me that they are all-in for “win now” mode. JZ is making a run for GM of the year if this pans out.
Do you remember the off-season where the Jazz brought in Conley, Bogdanovich, Davis, and Green?
Davis was coming off a good year! The decline in old centers seems to be rapid, and Whiteside has already fallen off a cliff.

I hope I’m wrong.

I don't think anybody has mentioned it, and since I'm already hated around here, I'll go ahead and do so.

- We seem to be worried about the luxury
- Ryan Smith has a business model where he isn't opposed to changing a good thing for the hopes of a better thing

Does this Whiteside signing have anything to do with Rudy's long term fit with the Jazz? Is our FO getting guys (Doke and now HW) who play like Rudy, although definitely not to his level, to see if we can manage without him?

A Rudy trade at the deadline could clear us out of the luxury and start a new path for the team. I don't know what to think, but this HW signing really is strange to me.

I find this deal very interesting given that it's no secret the Jazz have interest in Pascal Siakam. I figured the Jazz were trying to do a deal centered around Bogey, but this makes me wonder if there's any possibility Gobert could be involved.

Wow I didn't see that coming.
What is the contract like?
