Eric Paschall is not who I thought he was

Never would've dreamed on a team with as many good shooters as this that 4 games into the season Paschall would be our second best 3 point shooter at a blistering 44%.

First it’s a great problem to have. Second they likely bring Gay along slowly. Third I don’t know… Whiteside and Paschall are both deserving of time. I think you cut Royce’s minutes and maybe Bogeys too to find 4-5 minutes a night to keep Eric engaged. You might selectively pick nights to rest a guy… including Whiteside to experiment with small lineups. Jared Butlers minutes might disappear. Gay may only get 15 minutes a night. Maybe they find out it works and move Bogey?
I was going to post all of the above but on the last part… trade Bojan for who? And how does whoever comes in solve that problem? Trade Bojan for someone who plays less than 30 minutes?

1. Preserve Royce’s energy.
2. Alternating rest games against every non-playoff team for Conley, Ingles, Gay.
3. If you wanted to get real creative, go to more OTs.

Yeah IDK... I don't think its a real possibility and the mechanics are tricky. It would be an offseason move after retaining Paschall imo. The other scenario is if we had an injury and are all in and felt we needed to balance the roster... that is a tough one to project as we have solid coverage of most injury issues to non-star players.

Its just a logical thought... if Gay gives us something close to what Bogey does but with better defense... and Paschall gives us good minutes... what could we get for Bojan if he is somewhat expendable? I don't think its a real thought in the front office though... they just pump they fist and are glad they have too much depth.

My brain must be farting.... what are OTs?
Overtimes. Let the young guys soak up minutes in the first 48 and then play a couple OTs with the main guys to get their minutes and get them used to high pressure situations. It’s some crazy 5D sex machine stuff but Quin may be up for it.

But I think we need to do the counter-intuitive thing here. We’re worried about balance with our depth but we should keep adding depth and problems to the pile. Go sign Dunn. It will all make sense in the end.

What happens when Gay gets back? Paschall deserves to be in the rotation and no one else currently in the rotation deserves to lose minutes. Gay has never played less than 21 minutes a game in his career.

It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out. Not just with the minutes, but how Gay fits in with the team. Paschall is contributing through energy, effort, and starring in a low usage role. Don't know if Gay really has it in him at this age to do the same thing.

It's very early, but starting in the preseason I've been loving what I see from Paschall. The shot is still a big question mark, he'll have to keep proving he can make them. But it wouldn't surprise me if by the end of the year we see Paschall in a higher regard than Gay. My guess is that we will end up playing both come playoff time where Whiteside's effectiveness will drop.

Whiteside and Paschall are our 9th and 10th men when fully healthy. We have two young guards who it is safe to rely on in a pinch. I wouldn't mind adding one perimeter defender but I highly doubt we do it. I'd be looking for a guy you could get on a 1+1 deal and cut Oni. Or cut Oni and do a 10-day dance to manage the tax. Look for a home for Udoka (or just decline his option).

I'm 100% sure they won't go after Dunn though... I'm sorry. They would see JB and Forrest as guys at the same position. I think you should leave the light on for him. Carry the torch.

Small ball we’d need to switch and defense is going to be compromised right now with Whiteside there is not a huge need to willingly go small. It’s offense where small ball wrecks teams. If he is the roll man and the floor I spread is tough to stop (theoretically). He can do more on the roll than our centers because he can catch, dribble, pass and opens up passing lanes for bounce passes and such that aren’t there with the bigs. He doesn’t have the high catch and finish radius those guys do.

Small ball 5 just has to survive on defense and get a stop here and there. The big benefit is on offense.
I don't think Jazz will go small 5 unless they have to match defensively. Screens and Rolls having gravity is what Jazz live off.

May be if teams try to take away the screens like Clippers did against us but then again we could go Gobert/Paschall with the way Paschall defending and attacking the glass and forces teams off small ball.

I really need to see more and think. I haven't been interested much this season.

Jazz also have been doing different things defensively. I have seen some hard hedges that I don't think are the answers but we will see.

Whiteside, Bogey, Gay, and Ingles are all 32+. It would benefit them all to be on a regular resting cadence. Conley is obviously going to rest too, but I would give those minutes to Butler. Wouldn't hurt to give the other vets (Gobert, Mitchell, Royce, Clarkson) a day off every now and then either.

There will be room for Paschall to get minutes through resting or inevitable injuries like he is now. Not too worried about that. I'd rather Quin alternate the players in the rotation than trying to split all the minutes up on a night to night basis.

There are like 2 minutes of non-garbage time per night from Butler you can swap out somewhere... cut Whiteside's minutes by 3-4 minutes... Royce/Bojan donate 3-4 minutes. Paschall gets 8 minutes, Rudy Gay picks up 16, Whiteside drops to 12 minutes... or 13ish and Rudy shaves a minute or two. We experiment with small ball for a few minutes a night.

There is a little juice to squeeze and then there are going to be injuries and minutes ramp up then. Keep everyone fresh as hell and hopefully engaged.

Because of your lack of enthusiasm, I'm going to be adding RHJ to my list of demands.

Move Udoka and Hughes into cap space. Waive Oni. Sign Dunn and RHJ.

Conley / Butler / Forrest
Mitchell / Clarkson / Dunn
Bojan / Ingles / Fitts
Royce / Gay / Paschall
Rudy / Hassan / RHJ

That leaves one required roster spot for novelty signings. I'm willing to look at applications for novelty signings.

Paschall would be a beast in the screen and roll game as a 5. He would be like Harrell with a spaced floor.

Defense/rebounding is the much bigger question. Whiteside and Paschall both have their strengths and weaknesses there. I don't love the idea of matching up to small ball because the whole point of doing that is you can matchup 1-5 but the Jazz have issues matching up 1-4 already. I do like how it forces the other defenders to engage and be more active, however. It may not be effective as a whole, but it builds better defensive habits.

I don't know what players actually prefer, but I'd rather see a guy sit one game and play the next instead of chopping up the rotation and finding minutes here or there.

Me too... my worry is Quin has had such a hard time with managing this at times. He seems to push too hard or be too rigid. We are close to 100%... does Quin have the discipline to sit Mike and/or Joe on the backend of the back to back coming up? Those are big games... do we want to test ourselves or hamstring ourselves in 1 or both? What if you decide to sit Mike and Joe in Milwaukee then lose the Chicago game?

I was very excited when I heard we traded for him, and thought he’d be better than most thought. I just remember researching his second year, he went through a lot, not being healthy and almost exclusively playing center, wore him down, so I thought there were a lot of factors that held him down last year because he actually got off to a good start but slowed down as the year went on. He’s definitely more comfortable playing a 4.
