Trade deadline discussion

I'm not sure either. I do think there is still some potential for a slight bump up in production/effectiveness. He's just never had much consistency in his career between his injuries, the situation in Brooklyn changing wildly, and in Indiana he's had two coaches. It's likely he is who he is at this point... but there is still a slight case for it.

I do wonder if you replace a bad defender with an average one if it looks a lot different because our perimeter defense is so porous. I'm lukewarm but I could talk myself into it if we got him. I think realistically there aren't many guys available with that pick and Caris is one I can see as a realistic possibility. I think you could also slip a Ingles for Lamb swap in the deal that saves us some luxury tax and Lamb is at least good at getting steals. Would be an athleticism upgrade.

I'm not sold on the deal and that is likely a good sign it is in the ball park of fair.
I just don't know that much about him to truly rate him. He might be exactly what we need, but seems like he's hurt quite a bit.

Alright... so here is my half baked trade idea of the day. Caris Levert was pretty over-rated in the past and it seems like things have turned on him a bit. He isn't viewed with the assumption that he was going to have some amazing development step. I think he could be slightly under-rated now. I think he could have a small bounce like Norman Powell did.

So would Indiana do JC/Butler/Udoka and a lightly protected future first for Caris? Would we have to add a Royce for Craig swap in there? I think I like the idea of Caris more than actual Caris... but I think he fits better with Mike and Donovan than JC. He's younger and is an athletic wing who leaves some to be desired on offense and defense... but maybe with some of the screens Rudy sets and with some decent passers he could take an efficiency jump. I honestly don't know how he is defensively. I get the impression he is averagish... which is a big improvement.

I think Indiana wouldn't turn their nose at JC. He could be the willing player going to the bench that can help them... ain't like cap space does them a whole lot of good. I'd be hesitant to give up Royce.

My other potential shift would be seeing if Mike can do the Manu off the bench thing... if Caris fits well he could start and we would start the game right sized. Obviously Mike is on the court to close games. IDK... its just a thought. Dragic did it with great success a couple years ago in Miami.
I’m not trading Butler for Levert

If we're giving up a pick and Butler I would want a bigger defensive upgrade than Levert, who I'm not sure even is an upgrade.
I'm confident that Caris is an upgrade over JC defensively. Would hopefully allow the offense to still be devastating. Should be more playable in the playoffs... It is a lot of theory but good two-way wings are the hottest commodity... and maybe Caris has enough to get slightly better on both sides of the ball and can be that. JC is also just a bad contract... not untradeable... not horrible... but bad.

I love Butler... the issue is his short contract and the fact that we kinda need to see him now or else he likely goes to waste for us. We have him signed through next year. IF he actually gets to play he may show enough to get an offer we may not be comfortable matching. The lack of playing time is likely to become a problem for him at some point personally and he may not want to be here. The first is the bigger hangup for me. Unless we offload JC or Mike I just don't see him playing here. It kinda sucks.

Josh Richardson would probably be a better fit for the Jazz than Levert. Richardson defends, moves the ball and makes 3s. He's shooting nearly 10 percentage points from 3pt than Levert this year.

Levert reminds me of an Alec Burks-type so-so offensive player.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they add someone like Kenrich Williams and then just send Ingles out for a second round pick or something just to get rid of his salary and help with the luxury tax and to open up rotation minutes for Willams and House, or whichever perimeter defender(s) we end up trading for or signing for the rest of the season. If we don't move a rotation piece then it doesn't matter who else we add because they won't get any minutes.

He is... If you squint a little you could see him being the player you'd want alongside Donovan long term. Shooting needs to improve a bit... Has length and some creation ability. Some guys finally get and stay healthy...

Worst case is he is an upgrade over JC... there is significant downside but if the pick is top 10 protected the risks are mitigated.

Josh is a good defender but a little over-rated on that end. While he is having a good shooting year Caris and Josh are basically the same for their careers. Josh dribbles the air out of the ball and is not a better passer imo. We will need some creation on the wing with Ingles slowing down and if we ship out JC. AB not a bad comparison... I think he has a slightly higher ceiling than what AB currently is... AB would be an upgrade over JC.

I think we end up dropping some salary if a deal gets done. The three team deal with Cleveland and OKC where Ingles ends up in Cleveland and Ricky goes to OKC and we land Kenrich saves us sooooooo much money. Ya Ryan!

It wouldn't surprise me at all. Would make me sad though.

It really sucks, it is essentially a wasted pick. He should be on the mentorship track with Conley and playing regular structured minutes to develop. Instead he is slapped at the first sign of a mistake and gets PT only when we have literally everyone out on COVID. It is stupid and flies in the face of our supposed vaunted crack player-development coaching team.

I think seeing how Quin has mismanaged the Butler situation has pushed me solidly into the camp that Quin is overly rigid and will only give a young player a chance if he has to.

I will add that he irrationally favors and disfavors certain players. Can someone explain to me what drove him nuts about AB that isn’t a worse issue with Clarkson?

With regard to all of the above, if Butler ain’t gonna play then his value is just going to continue to diminish to us and others, so they might as well trade him. Or they could find a team desperate for a flamethrower and clear some opportunity for him. But him sitting there while Clarkson just does whatever the hell out there is compounding some real mismanagement of the roster.

The Jazz have a lot of depth right now with players like Paschall And House that can contribute a few minutes if they were freed up by making a 2 for 1 or a 3 for 1 trade. The Jazz need to put together a package for a good player. The roster needs a shake up that is not held hostage by sentiment. This move does that. I honestly feel like the bigger the gamble the bigger the reward. Jazz always play it relatively safe. Ainge may be the changing factor in that.

Its also really weird. He was so good in the pre-season they gave him that 3-4 minute role... then he struggled (he's a rookie in a tiny minute situation) and they moved to Forrest... for a role that doesn't matter. That 3-4 minutes isn't saving Mike's hammy. Forrest has been bad... flat out. If you are going to have some bad minutes... why the hell wouldn't you use them on something with some upside. Then the nights Mike is out he should be more ready for a bigger role where you can actually make some evaluations.

They should have just kept the 30th pick so they had him (or someone else) on a long term deal. If you only have 2 years then I guess maybe you need to get someone that fits better and can get on the court immediately.

I think Forrest is the hard working guy who has put in his time... so he gets the nod.

I like Levert and think he was fine defensively before this year. His condition probaby had an effect. He would still be an upgrade over Clarkson defensively and his offensive style fits as much.

i wouldn't start him over Conley, though.

Can we get anything substantial by packaging Rudy Gay and Clarkson?
No... I also don't see us moving Gay. "Hey thanks for picking us... also welcome to Indiana" (or whatever terrible team we sent him to). Not that he is off limits. I think the return would have to be pretty good to do that type of move.

If the rumored Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris for Fox, Hield, and Barnes trade goes through I think that Sacramento becomes a potential JC destination. Have some expiring deals and would need some on ball shot creation.

Maybe OKC takes a look at Bagley, we send JC to Sac, we get Kenrich Williams (the apple of our eye)... maybe we amend the pick protections as well to sweeten the deal. Ryan saves all teh monies!

Also all the rumors about Grant wanting an extension and wanting to be a key piece of the offense wherever he goes just screams "don't trade for me if you are a contender... I care more about my role than winning".
