Pizza Hut

Does anyone remember doing the book reading thing for Pizza Hut in school? You’d read a book, your teacher would sign a coupon, and you’d be able to get a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut? I remember Pizza Hut being good… but that was in the 90s and I was a punk kid who’d eat anything. Then they closed a bunch of them and I don’t think I’ve been back since probably jr high.

Was Pizza Hut good? If so, why did they close so many stores? Do you guys have any memories of this? Playing computer/video games like Oregon Trail and NBA Jam, going to the library and actually having to know what the number system meant, and Pizza Hut were staples of my childhood.

I remember doing that book reading thing and I always loved Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut used to be better when they were also sit-down restaurants. Better preparation, ingredients and care went into their food.

Dominoes is usually better for bigger chains and Papa Johns is about on par with PH, but a huge part of a good pizza really comes down to the person making it. Spreading toppings and actually putting more than six pepperoni on, not burning the crust or huge air bubbles, etc.

Local pizza chains are always your best bet.

Pizza Hut has always been the grease bomb pizza in my experience. I need a napkin to sop up all the oozing grease before I can even pick up the slice.

I don't think that's a new thing.

In their restaurants they used to have an all you can eat pizza bar. I had a friend who worked at a location that had that and they talked about a significant number of regular customers for the AYCE pizza bar would go purge in the bathroom a few times during their visit, some really fat guys but also some skinny chicks. Maybe that's what killed them?

Wait are they not sit downs anymore?

I remember that too. I remember them having a salad bar. They don’t have those anymore?

Like I said, the ones where I grew up all closed. I don’t even know where the nearest one is now.

There are at least 8 of them in the Salt Lake Valley. They still exist. To my extraordinary disappointment my wife and kid like them better than most other convenient pizza places and by far more than any that deliver to my house. So I basically don't ever eat pizza because Pizza Hut is my least favorite pizza ever, I'd rather eat second rate frozen pizza than Pizza Hut.

LOL

I could never purge. I hate throwing up. I remember the grease. I think they’d actually fill the pan up with grease and then set the pizza into it.

I’m getting older so I can’t hold pizza as well as I used to. A few years ago some friends got a carnivore pizza from The Pie. It looked and tasted delicious. But after one slice I was tapped out. I could feel the pizza every inch of the way as it moved its way through the digestive tract and it didn’t matter how tums I downed. Oof

Did Pizza Hut ever have arcade consoles inside? I seem to remember an NBA Jam being there. But I might be thinking of a different childhood restaurant.

Growing up in UT Co in the 1990s had some real advantages. We also had a Kenny Rogers in Orem and I remember being mesmerized by the spit roasting entire chickens over the wood fire.

I hear you. Finding good pizza in Utah is hard. Is it because most of them are chains? It seems like most of the pizza places we go to are miss. I guess dominoes and Papa Johns are okay. My wife likes John’s but I don’t. To me it tastes pretty bland. Papa Murphy’s might be the only place nearby that is decent. I like The Pie but feel disgusted each time after eating it. Looking back at my last Dr’s appt, probably need to lay off that stuff for a while. Litzas off 500 S in SLC is okay. Settabellos is good for Italian thin crust. I remember Tony’s in Ogden being good.

Anyway…

Free Wheeler was also very good, they had great garlic bombs. There used to be a place called Big Kahuna Pizza, on like 13th S & State, did simply amazing BBQ pork pizza, but I think they got bought and closed.

We still have Pizza Hut around here, and they're my favorite. I worked at one when I was in high school.

They do actually grease the bottom of the pan for pan pizzas, not for the thinner crusts (at least, back in the 70s).

You should all come all the way to Redlands and try Uncle Howie's. One of our favorite spots. My go-to is a supreme with triple mushrooms, well-done.

In Utah the best pizza I've had, bar none, is at Ogden Pizzeria and has been for years. They have "pizza salads" with essentially the toppings of a supreme pizza on a salad. Best blue cheese dressing I've ever had. Get the "mixed" sauce (half spicy, half mild), it's great. Always consistently great pizza. Worth a stop if you're in the Ogden area. Just be prepared to wait for a seat. But you can get takeout and it travels well.

My daughter works at the Centerville Megaplex and they serve little 6” or 8” Pizza Hut pizzas in there. I don’t know how closely they are like the normal PH ones, but they’re not very good the morning after she brings one home from work.

A deluxe pizza from Marcos Pizza is pretty good. Recently, I went to a new place in Sandy UT called Via313 Pizza and it was a very good Detroit-style pizza, but also very pricey.
