What's new

Game Thread Oct 21, 2022 06:00PM MT: Jazz at Timberwolves

Added to Calendar: 10-21-22

I like this new era of young coaches being able to relate to the athletes of the day. The camaraderie Hardy seems to have with the team has them buying into selflessness, team work, and grit.

Hardy is a very high EQ guy. Hoping he can manage through adversity and egos.
Play of the game for me was JC WITH 1min left in OT, drives, meats Gobert, does a 180 in air and does a blind kick out to Conley for a huge wide open three for a 2pt lead. I can’t stress the level of difficulty on that pass. How did he even know Conley was there??
play of the game was the conley foul on Gobert. 99 out of 100 other players concede a dunk in that situation. Conley hustles, lays out, risking injury, and put Gobert in the line. Conley is a winner who makes winning plays. Reminds me of Ginobli or Bobby Jones in that regard. Stuff that misses stat sheets

Every time I watch KAT, I see the opposite. Talent out the wazoo, but has no sense of what it takes to make winning plays. He either doesn’t know how or does not have the desire. It’s a mental game with extraordinary athletes.

There's a difference between being allowed to handle and explore some openings and doing what Green does.

Agreed. And green didnt do much more than vanderbilt when he was vanderbilts age. I totally expect vanderbilt to improve (he is a hard worker) and play more like green as he gets older.

I would also add that there is a difference in talent surrounding the 2 players imo.

I expect Conley to make those plays, but you generally don’t see CJ make the play he did. It was ****ing incredible, his back was completely turned to Conley, and somehow has the wherewithal to do a 180 jump, spot Conley and kick it out blindly as Gobert cuts him off. 9-10 times he puts up a shot that has no chance of going in or he turns the ball over. The degree of difficulty on that pass was as tough as it gets.

Conley’s play is a hustle play, yes, many players wouldn’t bother, but that’s not Conley’s makeup, and the type of thing he’s known for. The JC play was 100% improbable

It was a nice play. Go back and watch it in slo Mo. he jumped, Gobert challenged, he turns 90 degrees, spots Conley and hits him. Not at all blind, he was looking right at mike.

For some reason league pass does not capture video screen shots but this is all clear if you pause the video.

He’s awkward and cringy… maybe the dumbest “star” player. The weird leg kick out… the over the top complaining. Then he just does weird ****. Not sure he can be the centerpiece of a team that is a true contender… he melts down quicker than butter on a hot griddle.

I can't put my finger on why he's so cringy, but he's got to be the most cringe in the NBA. It's like KAT is larping as an NBA player despite the fact that he is indeed an NBA player. I remember when he was intentionally trying to make his voice sound deeper, that kinda sums up who he is. The screaming and pounding of the scores table when he got the challenge to go his way was ridiculous. He's not an intense competitor, he's just a whiny baby. At least when someone like CP3 cries you actually know he's a paranoid competitor. Feels like KAT is pretending to be a basketball player in a movie haha.

It sounds like he's a chill dude off the court, but he's got to drop this act. KAT, Ant, and D'LO are all immature babies and they are setting the culture of the team.

A couple of thoughts:

- I don't think Rudy and KAT are complementary players. Rudy kind of gets in the way of what KAT wants to do. I thought they would try to stagger their minutes as much as possible. Maybe they figure it out, but I'm not sure it's ever truly synergistic.
- Jared Vanderbilt has a chance to be the first non center in a long time to lead the league in rebounding. If he can stay out of foul trouble to get more minutes he's going to pile up the rebounds. He is currently averaging 21.8 rebounds per 36 minutes (7.5 offensive rebounds per 36 minutes).
- The tank is in trouble. I'll admit I was wrong to think this team wasn't capable of 30 wins. It's amazing how confidence and effort can make up for talent. I thought we would have longer to keep the vets before we would get in trouble, but Zanik needs to be working the phones hard to offload some talent.
- On the other hand my brain has started running scenarios where we could add talent and be a legit playoff team this year. I don't seriously think it's logically a good idea. We most likely look a lot worse once we run out of energy and lose some our confidence, but this team has me all confounded.

It’s everything… it’s not just the over reaction to good stuff and bad but the way he does it is awkward. The fact he does it on **** that obvious… the weird leg kick out thing… even in his personal life he does cringy things. I just hate watching him… crazy low IQ guy for a star imo.

A guard that can't make threes isn't great. He played better last night than against Denver. I just feel like those minutes would be better spent developing Ochai.

Ochai is behind JC and Beasely, not THT. If you cut minutes for THT they are going to NAW. He'll likely get some time when Conley sits against Houston though. . .
