Don't Get Rid of Defensive 3 seconds but...

I would increase it to 6 or 7 seconds which is almost like you don't have it anymore. But if you move the ball quickly over the half court line then you would 2 or three times were the big man would have to move. This gives some power back to the defense.

The other big one is hand checking. I would allow anything goes except for the blatant near the paint.

i never like the rule that you cant handcheck guards but you can club big guys underneith. you want to help defenses call travels and carries correctly. no more ******** gather steps or control dibbles. stop holding the ball like you are a waiter. fix those things and you fix a lot of whats wrong with basketball.

Hand checking is still allowed, just to an extent.

The carry thing is ridiculous. Not a single mildly good ball handler in the league today doesn't carry the ball every other dribble. Watched some highlights of other teams recently and saw a few times a guy with a slow belt-high dribble at the top of the key and the ball rested flat on their palm every single bounce up. Then once it was firmly nestled in the palm of his hand he started his move by throwing it across his body as a cross-over move. None of the premier ball-handlers today could function if you really called carrying the ball as originally intended.

Agreed.

One of the best basketball players on my son's team (9 year olds) became infamous for carrying the ball. Opposing coaches would hound the refs to call it every time and he ended up getting called for it more and more as the season went on. I remember one particular coach was irate when the refs wouldn't call it every time and I was just thinking how dumb it all was. There is no way he would get called for that at the higher levels, and so no reason to call him for that in a 9 year old rec league game.

This is interesting and something I hadn't really though of, so I'm still digesting.

I do agree it would be nice to have some more defensive oriented rule changes. The most impactful idea I can think of is to move out the 3pt line and to get rid of the corner 3.

The way it was originally intended really sucked though. I think in the 90s we reached a nice balance, where you could have your hand on the side of the ball, allowing nice crossovers. But the modern style of basically palming the ball on every dribble is a bit much.

There is no reason to have defensive 3 seconds. Don’t see the purpose anymore.

Handchecking….I don’t think it would actually be an effective way to play defense anymore. NBA players can pull up from anywhere and draw shooting fouls. Luka and JJ were just talking about this. I don’t mine allowing it….but I feel like the skill level of NBA players these days changes that dynamic.

I agree that the carrying is egregious. Needs to be some pushback there.

I think contact at the rim, particularly contact created by offensive players, should be reevaluated. Remember when “verticality” was a big buzzword. I think we’ve lost some of that and I think we need to reconsider what it means to go “straight up”. It should be more about the defenders body position….instead, refs look at if the arms come forward one cm which is almost inevitable when an offensive players rams into the defense.

Eliminate the charge. Allow more body contact if the defender is moving with the offensive player and is between them and the basket. Stop trying to enforce rules like attorney's and call the game the way it is intended. Reward guys that don't exaggerate contact and are just making basketball plays. Guys that try to trick refs get refed differently. Try to find some measure of officiating consistency and sanity.
