If KAT becomes available should Jazz be interested?

There are a lot of rumors that Karl Anthony-Towns will be traded this offseason. The Wolves have played well with out him. Minnesota could get a decent haul for him. He seems accident prone. I think he would be the perfect 5 out center next to Lauri.

It would all come down to what the Wolves want for him. We could give them back some of their picks. I am not sure who they would want.

Anyway your thoughts?

More of a clash with Lauri than mesh. He doesn't have the drive we need in a #1 but he'll lock up #1 money for half a decade. Our window will slam shut as we end up being the timber-pups v2. Does nothing to elevate our team or game. Oh we might be able to build around him to win some games and maybe even be in the playoffs. So if that's the entire goal then, sure why not. But if the goal is to actually compete, he's not the guy.

I don't like watching him play, but I do think he's becoming a little underrated. His offense is elite for his size, and he actually plays better defense than most think.

He’s gotten a lot better on defense/matured a bit as he’s gotten older. Hot take, but he’s a better offensive player than Ant and he should be getting more of the offense instead of sacrificing.

Health is a big concern, however.

If our plan is start winning sooner than later of course we should be interested. I do hate watching him play though he’s so awkward.

I’d pass just cuz the guy makes me cringe. No doubt talented. I think his contract should depress his value a bit and they may not get what you’d expect. I can understand us doing it if the price was low.

I would. He's incredibly talented and is fun to watch. I really don't get why people think the opposite. Makes the biggest effort to assist Gobert than anyone I've ever seen
If that's why you want him then I got some bad news for ya. We wouldn't want him to make efforts to assist gobert because gobert isn't on the jazz

I'm 100% a part of this, but I do think we overreact to large "bad contracts". For example, nothing this summer likely changes if we don't have the bad money of JC+JC. Taking out FA cap space is never good, but you've also got to consider our FA outcomes. When it does come into question is when we get close to the tax and sell off players/picks to pay for more golf trips. KAT has 3 years + player option. I suppose things could get hairy if he accepts the player option as Keyonte+Hendricks would then be on larger contracts. But that is kind of a champagne problem. Who knows if they will be that good to cause us cap issues 4 years down the line and if they do it's a great thing.

The biggest opportunity cost is that if you're trading for KAT, you're likely not trading for someone else at that level. What are our chances of trading for someone better? Those outgoing assets being better?

This is the dilemma when you look at the entire context. KAT is incredible gifted offensively and is very unique. But he’s also got some big flaws and you can ask the question how much he impacts winning. Half our assets come from trading away Gobert, who does affect winning. How would we have viewed Gobert for KAT? My concern is that we’re viewing things like the guy at the casino “I won $400 today!” but neglects how much they walked in with and how much they lost elsewhere. But, hey, on that one spin of the roulette wheel he won $400. On the flip side of this, beggars can’t be choosers. We’re not going to be able to cash our picks in on Amazon for exactly the guy we want, thus playing into Danny’s “opportunistic” approach with varying results (see Collins, John). We may be looking at guys like LaVine and DLo and less guys like Giannis and Doncic, so it’s not like we can be super picky about passing on someone like a KAT or similar. And getting KAT would be a win, in a vacuum, like the dude at the craps table, but the net effect may have been that dude walked out of the casino -$300.

In 2001, Olden Polynice opted out of the last year of his deal with us worth $2.2M ($7.3M equivalent in todays cap dollars). He failed to secure a contract and spent the next two years out of the league, before he was able to play 12 total minutes with the Clippers in 2003-2004. We have a number of picks and time will tell, but I don’t believe we fully understood the uniqueness of our position before blowing it up, despite some big flaws and limited assets at the time.

The reality is that guys like KAT are the guys we can attain. It may not be reasonable to think we’re getting a unicorn at some point in the future. Do I think KAT gives us the foundation for contention? No. But that’s where we’re at.

Interesting I was looking at trade options and Sexton and Collins contracts work financially. Not a fan of trading Sexton.

I think KAT and Lauri make a great combo. Add in an improved Kendricks and that is a scary front court.

I think any deal would include Collins. That should make some fans happy.

I could like with this next year

George, Dunn, Kolek
Castle, Sexton
Hendricks, sensabaugh
Markkanen, Holmes, Bazely
KAT, Kessler,

No. Dude is the epitome of empty calories. Jazz can better use their assets in dozens of ways before even looking to buy low on KAT if he becomes available. Thanks, but no thanks.
