2024 NBA Draft Mega Thread

3FG% doesn't really matter if there's no context around volume/degree of difficulty. I don't expect him to be >42% because I expect him to shoot a much higher volume in the NBA and unless he's literally Curry it will be hard to make that mark....but I still think he will be one of the better shooters in the NBA. Dame, the second greatest shooter ever, shoots the same percentage as Kendall Marshall. It's a very incomplete way to look at things.
Using McDermott as a reference point he’s shot > 40% from 3PT range in 7/10 seasons.

McDermott took 600 3s in college and 600 FTs

Sheppard is at 150 and 65 respectively...

I think there are very different levels of confidence in projecting the shooting of those two prospects into the league.

Marshall was a pure pure PG as well.

Sheppard is hard to compare because no one who successfully plays a similar style to him is as small as him.
I kind of feel this is precisely why you need him to be a PG in the league. I don't think you can afford to play him with another small guard and expect great point of attack D.

Teams nowadays will play their smallest player at the 1, but also initiate from the 2 or 3. Sheppard fits that concept. You may decide he can't be on the floor with another small guard, but then you have to ask--okay, who else can run my offense when Sheppard is off the ball? If for no other reason, teams should be able to trap Sheppard and get the ball out of his hands. Sheppard should work, because he can guard his yard, and his shooting makes him an effective floor spacer. For example, the Celtics play Derrick White at the 1, and he's their smallest starter, but they also have Jrue or Tatum who can run the offense.

The other trend now is that, since the floor is normally so spaced, teams just give the ball to their best triple-threat player. Whoever is the best shooter off the dribble and best at putting pressure on the rim, just start the actions by giving that guy the ball and let him go to work. Sheppard probably isn't going to be that guy, but rather will be a complementary offensive player. Back when the Raptors won their chip, they were running their offense through Kawhi and using both Lowry and FVV as off-ball shooters/spacers.

One thing that I do really like about Sheppard is that he elevates pretty effortlessly and high on his jumpers. Makes me more confident in his ability to be a dangerous off the dribble shot creator.

The numbers on Shep as a PG are absolutely bonkers. I'm excited at the notion of him having the ball more as a pro. If it doesn't work out, still has elite role player qualities to fall back on.

Also....feels like we have more questions about Shep's shooting than Castle. Is that because he shot twice the percentage from 3?

With Shep it's about how good it is going to be? As in - is it going to be 38% or 45% good.
With Castle it's ... is it going to be average?

Well yeah… one was a senior and one was a freshman lol.

I don’t like the McConnell comparison either. TJ is a pure floor general. Sheppard I think will have a much more complete offensive game.

I just want to reiterate that the front office should absolutely be able to go get the guy they want in this draft. There should be plenty of opportunity to move up at a fair price even if we don’t get lucky. There is an opportunity here in this mess of a draft.

Draft night comes around and you have a deal in place that would send Keyonte out for Shep? Who’s taking the deal?
I slightly prefer Shep over Keyonte. With that said it's rare that a GM is going to trade out their recent draftees esp after the rookie season that Keyonte just had. Of course Ainge is ultimately running the show and he likely wouldn't hesitate to trade anybody if it improves the long term prospects of the Jazz.

I would say 'no' because I believe that Keyonte is more dynamic off the dribble. It's close though. Once Sheppard draws the attention of athletic wing defenders, I think he's going to need to give up the ball. Keyonte is faster and shiftier (I think).
