What's new

The R.I.P. Thread

So this one's actually from December of 2024 but John Sykes. He was only 65 and reportedly died from cancer.

He played in Thin Lizzy but was prominent in Whitesnake during their prime. Below I'm going to post a YouTube video that has the different guitar parts for "Is This Love" so that it can be appreciated a bit more (would be better if it wasn't someone else playing over but this at least gives some visual):

What I really appreciate about a lot of the guitar work, particularly here, is that it's first and foremost primarily about the song. This gets lost a lot, particularly in our current age of YouTube artists overplaying for the sake of showing some kind of technical skill. It really doesn't matter what instrument it is but it significantly peeves me watching almost any online drummer and having so many gratuitous fills that just completely kills the song and is a humongous distraction. This happens with guitar, too. I think this song strikes perfection with guitar work that it's able to keep the atmosphere of the song, give plenty of room to breath, but still have elements that are incredibly technical but in so doing blends perfectly into the soundscape and adds elements that serve the song and isn't just an elephant in the room. I'd almost say this is like Stewart Copeland of guitar, something that's way more technical than appreciated, but fits in so well that the technicality isn't overshadowing the fullness of the experience with the music.
