Seriously, if Trump could control what we think, he would. If he had a technology that detected “wrong thinking”, and who was “thinking wrong”, he’d be all over it. At the least, maybe we should expect a social credit system, he would love the degree of control enjoyed by authorities in China. It’s superb programming like Frontline that Trump is aiming at with this EO. I’m sure NOVA doesn’t anger MAGA, but it’s quality, educational TV, so it will be sacrificed.
This guy sucks. I thought the second season of Wolf Hall, the story of Henry VIII and his minister Thomas Cromwell, was one of the very best Masterpiece productions ever.
Likely going to be tough for PBS to survive this. Seems like they do “fundraising weeks” every other week, lately, just to keep themselves above water…
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that seeks to restrict public funds to NPR and PBS, two independent public news organizations that have faced Republicans’ ire for reporting they claim is biased.
The extraordinary order, which the president signed behind closed doors aboard Air Force One and the White House announced around midnight, is the biggest escalation yet in the Trump administration’s assault on the media.
The order claims that NPR and PBS produce “biased and partisan news coverage” and calls for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation to which Congress appropriates more than $500 million annually, to “cancel existing direct funding to the maximum extent allowed by law and … decline to provide future funding” to the news organizations.
“Which viewpoints NPR and PBS promote does not matter,” the order says. “What does matter is that neither entity presents a fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens.”
Federal funding accounts for about 15 percent of PBS’s annual revenue and 1 percent of NPR’s annual budget. PBS produces both news and non-news content.
The order is all but certain to be challenged in court.
Trump and congressional Republicans have for months threatened to cut funding to the organizations. In March, the leaders of PBS and NPR testified before the House DOGE panel to defend their federal funding.
Spokespeople for NPR and PBS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In a statement to the panel in March, Katherine Maher, NPR’s president and CEO, stressed the organization’s independence and asked Congress to “give us the opportunity to continue to serve the American people with this unique and vital resource.”
PBS CEO Paula Kerger said Tuesday on the network that many local stations “would not exist” without federal funding. “This is really a resource that the communities treasure and would not exist were there not federal dollars to help,” she added.
Trump in March wrote an executive order seeking to hollow out Voice of America, another independent, government-funded media organization the president has long accused of bias. A judge has since blocked that order.

Trump rewrites history. Authoritarians usually do, to justify their crimes. Hence the Big Lie. Hence, he cannot very well allow objective looks at the 1/6/21 attack on the capital. It’s shows like this that anger Trump. I’m sure this is no news flash to anybody here, we have to know by now that Trump does not suffer dissent well. Or at all. Anybody who does not think like Trump is an enemy of the people. Anybody who disagrees, even on inconsequential things, like whether Alabama was included in a hurricane warning(Sharpiegate) is “the enemy within”. If we had a technology that detected “wrong thoughts”, he’d use it. Donald Trump would go far beyond Chinese social credits if he was able.
But, we cannot have this. We simply cannot have truthful histories.

As is obvious by now, Trump is engaged in a war against any media outlet that dares to post Truth. Take his EO against PBS. I can easily point to one PBS program Trump would be enraged against: Frontline. The reason? Frontline examines facts, and documents facts. The program’s examination of the January 6, 2021 attack on the People’s House is a perfect example of what Trump insists MUST be removed: truth in history. Only an alternative history, a FAKE history, is acceptable under a dictator’s rule. There will be no exceptions.
The attack on Jan. 6 was the result of the 2020 election being stolen by Trump. That is a lie. And it is a lie that must stand as “fact” in Trump’s world. Think about that, if only for a second: the president will accept nothing less than bald face lies in describing recent American history.
Truth will be attacked, and expunged! In “most” real worlds, that’s usually seen as a problem, lolol…In an authoritarian fascist model, it’s a must: attack the truth at all costs.

CBS News’ 60 Minutes plans to air a segment on Sunday about Donald Trump‘s targeting of law firms with his executive orders, the latest sign that the show has not backed way from reporting on the president despite a lawsuit and concerns of corporate interference.
The show’s description of the segment is, “On the campaign trail, President Trump vowed to wield the power of the presidency to go after his perceived enemies. Now in the White House, Trump is using executive orders to target some of the biggest law firms in the country that he accuses of “weaponizing” the justice system against him.”
Correspondent Scott Pelley is reporting the story. On Sunday, he closed out the show by noting the departure of the show’s executive producer, Bill Owens, and calling out CBS’s corporate parent, Paramount Global.
“Bill made sure they were accurate and fair,” Pelley told viewers. “He was tough that way, but our parent company Paramount is trying to complete a merger. The Trump administration must approve it. Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways. None of our stories has been blocked, but Bill felt he had lost the independence that honest journalism requires.”
Trump has attacked the show over previous segments since he took office. Attorneys for CBS and Trump’s team have reportedly started mediation to try to resolve the president’s $20 billion lawsuit against the network over the way that 60 Minutes edited an interview with Kamala Harris last fall. The settlement discussions have taken place as Paramount Global seeks approval of its merger with Skydance.
The Harris segment, which ran in October, received a News and Documentary Emmy nomination earlier today for outstanding edited interview.
In explaining Owens departure to viewers, Pelley suggested that his resignation was meant to send a message about corporate interference in one of the network’s top shows and the crown jewel of television news magazines. Per the Times, Owens told staffers that altering the show’s independence was a “slippery slope.”
Trump has said that he is asking for “a lot” to settle the lawsuit. On Wednesday, he lashed out not just at the show, but The New York Times over its reporting that “legal experts have called the lawsuit baseless.” Trump called his case against CBS “a true winner.”
