So it appears that BYU will be starting a true freshman at QB for the first time in their program history.
Bear Bachmeier looks like he has won the job during fall camp.

Fun fact:
Taysom Hill transferred from Stanford to BYU
Bear Bachmeier transferred from Standford to BYU

Taysom Hill wore jersey #4 and #7 during his career at BYU
Bear Bachmeier wears jersey #47

Taysom Hill was 6 foot 2 inches tall
Bear Bachmeier is 6 foot 2 inches tall

Taysom Hill weighed 225 lbs
Bear Bachmeier weighs 225 lbs.

Just looked this kid up. Jesus, his legs are insane. Like a tank. Kid has to be squatting 450+. Any idea why he only played six games his senior year? How is BYU’s returning offense around him?

Ya his legs are nuts. He missed 8 games with knee injury his senior year. Still put up almost 7,000 passing yards and over 1700 rushing yards in high school to go with 59 passing TD's and 33 rushing TD's. Almost 70% completion percentage. Put up those numbers in his sophmore and jr years mostly since he didn't play basically at all as a freshman and missed the majority of his senior year.

Offense returning is good, possibly great. Lost 3 good offensive lineman. But I think their o-line will be about the same good because they added some studs (one dude transferred from michigan for example). They lost 2 of their top 3 receivers but their number 1 receiver returns and they had some depth so they should be about as good as last year. Their 3 best running backs all return (if one of them gets granted another year, which is expected) but due to some injuries there they are a little thin.

Now, I tried to be honest and objective but I know myself and know that im a glass half full guy so my optimism/hopium/homerism might have seeped in to my evaluation a bit.

No homerism though when I say that this is likely the best defense they ever had. Only weakness on defense is depth behind the starting D-line. I think they may employ a 3-4 defense or even 3-3-5 style defense at times.

Their kicker might be the best in program history as well. He is on a current streak of 16 made field goals in a row (quite a few over 50 yards and a few clutch last second game winners) and he didn't miss a single extra point last season. Their returning punt returner took a couple of punts to the house last season as well.

They retained literally every coach on the team even after last seasons 11-2 year so there is a ton of coaching continuity.

I guess what im saying is go to you local betting location and take the over. I think vegas has byu winning 6.5 games. I feel pretty confident they will start out 5-0. Should be easy money to get to 7 wins.

That’s the type of feedback I wanted!

Looks like Utah has themselves a quarterback. He’s as advertised as a duel threat. Great to see them thrash UCLA, though it might be a down year for them we will see. Still it’s a good look winning by 33 vs that program on the road game one and I think the Utes only punted once till the backups came in for mop up duties.

BYU won 69-0 vs maybe the worst team in all of college football. Bunch of crazy stats..... Portland state had negative 3 rushing yards for the game. BYU had 468 rushing yards.
53 total yards vs 606 total yards.
But the craziest stat to me is that BYU played 77 dudes in that game.

Oh and BYU kicker has made something like 80 PAT's in a row and 18 field goals in a row including a 56 yarder in this game that would have been good from 60 easy. He might (I mean no way to know) be the best kicker in the country.

Fun, albeit stupid game.

Funniest thing is the true freshman BYU QB new nickname. Quote from the Portland state head coach after the game: “I watched him during pregame because I was hoping that his height wasn’t right or his weight wasn’t right,” Barnum said after the game. “Then I looked at his *** and then his legs. He looked like a goddam centaur."

So some people are now calling him "The Centaur" lol

Defense and run game looked amazing. They had a 20 play almost 10 minute long drive in the 3rd quarter that will probably have Whittingham hard for a week.
Passing game was efficient.

Only thing I didn't like is having the QB lead the team in carries with 16 carries. That is too many imo. Good way to get that quarterback injured.

They had several long sustained drives. Been a while since I’ve seen a 20 play 9+ minutes drive. That’s a type of drive that when you have a lead severely decreases the chances of the other team coming back

Hello growers,

I’m a programmer who is also a botanist.
Recently I put online a interesting resource that also works as an application for both major systems.

The project is called smart growers’ calendar.

It includes a few main sections:
1) a complete growing guide
2) an artificial intelligence tool to detect issues
3) a lunar cultivation tool to know when to act for best results.

I’d really love if you try it and tell me what you think.
Your suggestions will help me improve it.

?? Here’s the link: https://grow.hotmoz.com

Many thanks and happy growing.

It just destroys the opponent mentally.
Utah put UCLA in the meat grinder and ground them up all game long (stole that analogy from a sports radio guy because it is a perfect description of what Utah did to UCLA.)
O-line looked even better than the hype and they had a ton of hype.
Fano is getting drafted in the top 10 I bet. He is that good.

That’s a great analogy for what happened. And I definitely want to see those two rb’s get more carries. They both looked good.

Last year Utah’s offense was so bad I wasn’t looking forward to the byu Utah game. Thought Utah might get blown out, but was wrong about that. This years byu Utah game should be a blast.

Ya I think both teams should be pretty close and be pretty even. The key here is the BYU QB imo. We all have no clue if he will be ready for that game this season. He didn't impress me with his passing ability in game one. Though he wasn't asked to do much either but I saw too many balls that were off target.

Game being at BYU at night helps BYU (those night games are wild) but Bear probably won't be ready for that game, this season, imo and if I'm right about that then I give Utah the edge.

It was night and day from what we saw from Utah last year on the offensive end. My brother texted me - Utah...playing offense. Am I on drugs!?

On the other hand in game 1 last season the utes put up 49 points and over 500 yards.
Against SUU but ya.

I just watched The Cut (highlight video BYU puts out for each game) and learned some new info.
The crowd against Portland State was the largest crowd at a BYU game since 2009 vs TCU.
BYU averaged more fans per game than any other team in the big 12 conference last year.
Will Ferrin (kicker) made a 56 yard field goal which ties the all time longest field goal in BYU history. Apparently Ferrin wanted to commit a false start and lose 5 penalty yards so he could attempt it from 61 and hold the record solo. Coaches told him no.
His 56 yarder definitely would have been good from 61 FWIW.

Interesting, I expected it to be longer considering the altitude right? He'll probably kick a longer one this season. same with Utah's kicker who kicked a 63 yarder in high school.
