Ace Bailey ROY watch

Flagg kind of has the LeBron thing going on where he has a sloppy handle but it doesn’t really matter cuz he overpowers smaller players and blows by bigger players. Can also see why a guy like Carter Bryant can give him some trouble.

That's not western order. Yang is his family name, not Hansen.

Ok, I read in an article that he prefers the Western order. So now I'm confused. Does he prefer given name first like we do or keeping his name the same as it has always been? Or was the writer of the article an "idiot"? Or am I an "idiot"? Or are you an "idiot"? And was his dad a diehard fan of Bobby Hansen so he named his son after him?

He's a monster at 18-years-old and won't be 19 until December 21. Just like Lebron who turned 19 on December 30 of his first year.

I'm sure we're all idiots in many ways.

But his name is 杨瀚森, which romanized works out to Yang Hansen, or Yang Han-sen, or Yang Han Sen, depending on how you choose to deal with Chinese names (there's not a single "right" way). But if you want to put his name in a list like Avdija, Camara, Sharpe, Henderson, ... then Yang is most appropriate. For Deni, Toumani, Shaedon, Scoot, ... then I'd use Hansen. I'm 99.999999% sure Hansen has nothing to do with any Western naming influence, but it's just a funny coincidence that it coincides with a Danish surname.

(Don't get me started on how most Americans are going to mispronounce his name.)

I don’t know if Ace will win it but to say he has no shot is dumb. I’m guessing the Jazz will give him every opportunity to win it.

Interesting news on Ace Bailey’s injury

Hell of a story. Nearly killing each other and being friends after is so hockey. They had all the cool names back in the day. Hap Day, Buzz Boll, Dit Clapper, Odie Cleghorn. Where was Foghorn Leghorn?

OK, so this thread went a bit quiet. It's been five games. I looked at the rookies and many are doing really well. Harper, Edgecombe, Knueppel, Johnson, Fears, and Coward are doing great. Colin Murray-Boyles and Demin look at least solid. The only top-11 players drafted that clearly struggle are Ace and the known project Maluach. It looks like the 2025 draft was a great drafting class.

I know it's early but the contrast between Ace and pretty much everybody else drafted before and after him is pretty stark. So, why? I don't remember any conversation about Ace being particularly raw. At the moment Ace does not seem to have any NBA-level skill besides contested long twos ... and he is not exactly fire on them either. Why is Ace doing so much worse than his peers and are there signs that he can turn the things around soon?

It's been basically zero games.

I've followed very closely and every rookie has had ups and downs. Ace started the season sick. There is nothing to talk about at the moment.

Ace is learning the game. It’s new to him. He has physical advantages, but a bit like Cody last year, he needs to add some strength to really bring those tools out.

He’s also been recovering from a bad flu that took him out of preseason. He’s behind in his conditioning.

There was enough to talk about for many posters (including you) to fill 3 pages before Ace played a second for the Jazz but now there is nothing to talk about after his first five games? That was my whole point.

To me the most surprising part was the complete lack of any inside game. Ace is a tall and explosive player who is still trying to find his jumper. I expected him in the meantime trying to force his way inside and be aggressive (driving, put-backs, rebounding)... and I was wrong.

That's correct. This is a fan site. When we have something to get excited about, we talk about it and when there's nothing to say it goes quiet. Welcome to Jazzfanz.

It's fair to say that Ace has given us nothing to talk about, but it also doesn't mean anything. There is still plenty of time.

FWIW my only post in this thread says I give Ace a 10% chance at rookie of the year.

First of all, Demin has been horrific. Demin is so bad at ball handling that he has not attempted a shot from inside the arc this year. Second of all, Ace was considered very raw, yes. He's a PF who is 30 pounds underweight, he's a very young 19, he was not good at Rutgers, he doesn't know how to dribble yet, how to pass yet, how to defend yet, or how to play winning basketball yet. He's years away, hopefully he gets there or at least ends up like MPJ except without being a terrible guy.
