Lindsey did some great things and everyone that paints for long enough has stinkers.I actually think Lindsey was a great basketball mind. You don’t find Mitchell, Rudy, and Ingles at such value and not be pretty good. But painters are gonna paint and he had some real stinkers too.
He was a great fit for the system if you were building your scheme around Rudy's strengths and weaknesses. He was a legit back up option that didnt kill us without changing schemes. If it had panned out, that had more value than drafting a starter in some other positions. It obviously didnt work but I never had a problem with the logic behind it. I know I was in the very small minority.I still think the Udoka pick wasnt that bad on paper. The dude was a monster his last year at Kansas and he fit the system perfectly. He was absolutely massive and had a 40'' vertical (minus a few inches because he probably cheated the standing reach) It just seemed like he didnt really like basketball at all. No idea how much of that came through in the interview process. Did they just ignore it and draft him on his advanced stats/crazy tools?

Wait, so you’re saying because he hit on Rudy and Don, that’s why he drafted that doofus over McDaniels and Bane?Udoka was second in Lindsey’s model. IMO DL thought he was drafting the next Donovan / Rudy. He got greedy.
Why else draft a back up center when you have McDaniels and Bane right there, with the scouting department and Quin begging you to take them, on a team light on wing depth / size / defense?Wait, so you’re saying because he hit on Rudy and Don, that’s why he drafted that doofus over McDaniels and Bane?
McDaniels had a pretty bad freshman season and iirc had some character red flags that made him dropWhy else draft a back up center when you have McDaniels and Bane right there, with the scouting department and Quin begging you to take them, on a team light on wing depth / size / defense?
He must have felt very strongly about Udoka.
Dok had a series of bad injuries. It just didn't work out. He's still playing overseas.Eh….the Udoka pick was just like Lyles over Booker. Burks over Kawhi. Draft is hindsight 20/20….but yeah it’s incredible how many good players were in the range.
For me, it’s more frustrating because of the poor team planning aspect. The Jazz were obsessed with getting a PG to play next to Don and getting a backup C for Rudy. Doke was just a small episode of that. Terrible, terrible team building around those two. We failed them.
It does seem like Utah was set on getting a certain kind of player instead of being open to truly evaluating BPA.Eh….the Udoka pick was just like Lyles over Booker. Burks over Kawhi. Draft is hindsight 20/20….but yeah it’s incredible how many good players were in the range.
