What's new

Trade DL anticipations: New winds or par for the course?

We should cut salary right now.

And wait for next year to acquire Anthony Black as Magic can't afford to be a mid second apron team.

A lineup of George/Ace/Black/Lauri/Kess will cause havok in the West for years to come.

Everything suggests the tank is over and the pick's on its way out of town.
Jazz brass must be sold on Lauri, Key, Walker, Ace as the core and on some of the other guys as an affordable supporting cast and/or positive assets (Svi, Nurk, Walter, Brice...).

I do not expect any "big game hunting" or meaningful additions to the rotation.

I expect we'll trim some fat in the spirit of getting more cap flexibility / draft capital over the next few seasons.

I suppose it's possible we flip Kessler. I just sense his injury + contract status may preclude us from getting the value we would want back for him via trade. Unless he gets an offer that is just bonkers I imagine we'll re-sign him or match any offer sheet in RFA. We're a better team with him, no question, and IMO his salary should be well-beyond what we're comfortable with for a number of years to justify us losing him for nothing.

I wonder if Black for Kessler could be a base for a win-win a deal. We would need to add but no idea how much.

Nah, the only Black trade that the Magic would do is for a cheaper discount player because of their salary cap situation.

Hendricks/Brice/Collier would all make more sense in that regard.

I expect a rerun of the first two years of the rebuild (****ing around until February, then absolutely desperate and shameful tanking to close out the season).

They’re not trading Lauri. Probably can’t find anyone that wants Nurk/Anderson/Niang, they might cut some of them but only after the deadline. They might trade Brice if they can pry away a (highly protected) 1st from someone.

Being a buyer on the trade market is a complete nonstarter.

TLDR; I don’t expect any fireworks at the deadline.
Before the season started I thought it would be an easy natural tank getting rid of JC, JC, and Sexton. I thought this would be a ****** offense to go along with an all time bad defense. What I didn’t know was that Key would rise to this level of good. Also an underrated part of the problem is Nurk makes this a much healthier offense. He’s a great passer and the best post up big we’ve had since Big Al I think. Key has clearly benefited from his playmaking more than anyone else.

Nurk is the lowest hanging fruit on how to “ethically” tank. Wish they had the stones to let him go sooner than later. I suppose I should ponder the question of a trade more closely, but it doesn’t seem obvious to me who needs Nurk and has the room/matching salary to do so.

Considering their shooting woes, I'd say a Brice/Black swap would be a win/win for the teams.

That’s what the front office seems to be selling but we’ve been down this road before. It’s really hard to say this season as we’re way ahead of last in terms of games won at this juncture. If I had to speculate though I’d say that Markkanen is off the chopping block. So the question remains, do we start playing the injured reserve game and blatantly tank our fannies off again giving valuable minutes to our fringe second and third stringers while sending our stars on an early vacation? Or do we actually convey the most rigorously protected pick in the history of the NBA?

In either case, I’m not at all convinced that we’re ready or in a position to deal. Assuming that we’re keeping Lauri and Kessler, I don’t really think that we’ve succeeded in restoring Nurk’s market value- with a FT% below 50% and 3 pt% below 30% last I checked. He is not, nor will he ever be a rim protector - and why I’m so chagrined that we let Toronto steal away with Bamba! Like it or not, I think we’re stuck with Nurk for the foreseeable future.

So how about Sensabaugh or maybe Collier? I personally think we’d be foolish giving up on either one of these guys. We wouldn’t consider trading Ace and yet Brice replaces him for two adjacent games and gives us our biggest B2B game wins since I can’t even remember. And sure, Clayton Jr came in Saturday and wowed us with his shooting and poise, but it’s one game and as good as he is or can be will never have the explosive speed or ability to penetrate or pass in traffic like Collier. To me it’s not either or with those two as they’re so different, they provide a strategic option for Hardy depending on the team we’re facing.

So what do we do at the deadline? Chemistry is everything and we definitely don’t want to bring in some grandstander like Trae or Booker that would only compromise that. If in fact, we’re going for it, I say we cut bait with certain first year vets (take your pick) and take a flyer on the waiver and free agent market. I see where Spencer Dinwiddie is available, I’d prolly start there.

lmfao you are delusional

Black has been looking like a potential star as of late and he's shooting it better than Brice.
In no way saying we wouldn't have to attach more assets to the trade, but we should be getting somewhat of a discount in helping our their cap situation- it shouldn't be even steven.
