Maybe not explicitly as in the only reason but there is never only one reason to make a trade. I believe that getting worse was a big reason for the trade.

The post I quoted referred to a situation where if we keep Collins it's another half tank yet I feel like we had Collins on the roster last year (not to mention sexton) and it was a full tank.

Clarkson seems to have got the better deal. He gets to play for a contender and gets more money. Sexton gets to go to a non contender (probably a non playoff team) and gets no extra money.

This is why a buyout is good. Clarkson still gets his millions from us, gets some more money from his next team and he gets to go play for a contender. If I were sexton I would have preferred this route.
